It is derived from MESODERM and comprised of three zones (outer ZONA GLOMERULOSA, middle ZONA FASCICULATA, and inner ZONA RETICULARIS) with each producing various steroids preferentially, such as ALDOSTERONE; HYDROCORTISONE; DEHYDROEPIANDROSTERONE; and ANDROSTENEDIONE. Adrenal cortex function is regulated by pituitary ADRENOCORTICOTROPIN.

Kidney Cortex definition: The outer zone of the KIDNEY, beneath the capsule, consisting of KIDNEY GLOMERULUS; KIDNEY TUBULES, DISTAL; and KIDNEY TUBULES, PROXIMAL.
renal cortex definition: outer part of the substance of the kidney, composed mainly of glomeruli and convoluted tubules.
Cortex of kidney definition: Region of parenchyma of kidney representing the outer portion.
Lens Cortex, Crystalline definition: The portion of the crystalline lens surrounding the nucleus and bound anteriorly by the epithelium and posteriorly by the capsule. It contains lens fibers and amorphous, intercellular substance.
Motor Cortex definition: Area of the frontal lobe concerned with primary motor control. It lies anterior to the central sulcus.
motor cortex definition: area of the frontal lobe concerned with primary motor control; it lies anterior to the central sulcus.
Occipital Lobe definition: Posterior part of the cerebral hemisphere.
Occipital lobe definition: Occipital lobe is the one of five lobes of the cerebral hemisphere which occupies the posterior-most portion of the hemisphere. Anteriorly, it shares an arbitrary border with the parietal lobe and temporal lobe. Medially, it is bounded by the longitudinal cerebral fissure.
Occipital Lobe definition: The posterior part of the cerebral hemisphere. (MeSH)
Parietal Lobe definition: Upper central part of the cerebral hemisphere.
Parietal lobe definition: Parietal lobe is the one of five lobes of the cerebral hemisphere which occupies the dorsal-posterior portion of the hemisphere. It is bounded by the central sulcus on its anterior border and and by the longitudinal cerebral fissure on its medial border. Posteriorly it shares an arbitrary border with the occipital lobe.
PARIETAL LOBE definition: One of the lobes of the cerebral hemisphere located superiorly to the occipital lobe and posteriorly to the frontal lobe. Cognition and visuospatial processing are its main function. (NCI)
Parietal Lobe definition: One of the lobes of the cerebral hemisphere located superiorly to the occipital lobe and posteriorly to the frontal lobe. Cognition and visuospatial processing are its main functions.
Somatosensory Cortex definition: Area of the parietal lobe concerned with receiving general sensations. It lies posterior to the central sulcus.
somesthetic sensory cortex definition: region of the cerebral cortex receiving the somatic sensory radiation from the ventrobasal nucleus of the thalamus; it represents the primary cortical processing mechanism for sensory information originating at the body surfaces (touch) and in deeper tissues such as muscle, tendons, and joint capsules (position sense); it corresponds approximately to Brodmann's areas 1, 2, 3 on the postcentral gyrus.
Temporal Lobe definition: Lower lateral part of the cerebral hemisphere.
Temporal lobe definition: Temporal lobe is the ventrolateral lobe of five lobes comprising each cerebral hemisphere. It is bounded dorsally by the lateral fissure and posteriorly by an arbitrary border shared with the occipital lobe.
temporal lobe/cortex definition: lower lateral lobe of the cerebral hemisphere.
Visual Cortex definition: Area of the occipital lobe concerned with vision.
visual cortex definition: area of the occiptal lobe of the cerebral cortex concerned with vision.
Prefrontal Cortex definition: The rostral part of the frontal lobe, bounded by the inferior precentral fissure in humans, which receives projection fibers from the mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus. The prefrontal cortex receives afferent fibers from numerous structures of the diencephalon, mesencephalon, and limbic system as well as cortical afferents of visual, auditory, and somatic origin.
neocortex definition: the newer, 6 layered portion of the cerebral cortex showing stratification and organization characteristic of the most highly evolved type of cerebral tissue.
Neocortex definition: The largest portion of the CEREBRAL CORTEX. It is composed of NEURONS arranged in six layers.
Entorhinal Cortex definition: The cytoarchitecturally well-defined area of multilaminate cerebral cortex on the medial aspect of the parahippocampal gyrus, immediately caudal to the olfactory cortex of the uncus. The entorhinal cortex is the origin of the major neural fiber system afferent to the hippocampus, the so-called PERFORANT PATHWAY. (Stedman, 25th ed)
