Glomerulonephritis, IGA definition: A chronic form of glomerulonephritis characterized by deposits of predominantly IMMUNOGLOBULIN A in the mesangial area (GLOMERULAR MESANGIUM). Deposits of COMPLEMENT C3 and IMMUNOGLOBULIN G are also often found. Clinical features may progress from asymptomatic HEMATURIA to END-STAGE KIDNEY DISEASE.
IgA nephropathy definition: most common cause of primary glomerular disease in Europe, Australia, and United States; lesions formed as a consequence of mesangial formations of immune deposits composed of IgA.
immunoglobulin A definition: predominant immunoglobulin in seromucous secretions such as saliva, colostrum, milk, tracheobronchial and genitourinary secretions.
Immunoglobulin A definition: Represents 15-20% of the human serum immunoglobulins, mostly as the 4-chain polymer in humans or dimer in other mammals. Secretory IgA (IMMUNOGLOBULIN A, SECRETORY) is the main immunoglobulin in secretions.
IgA definition: IgA is the immunoglobulin subclass that is associated with antibody-mediated mucosal immunity. It is secreted as dimers into the mucosa and is the most effective isotype at fixing complement by the alternative pathway, even though it lacks the ability to fix complement by the classical pathway. There are two subtypes in the human - IgA1 and IgA2.
Immunoglobulin A, Secretory definition: The principle immunoglobulin in exocrine secretions such as milk, respiratory and intestinal mucin, saliva and tears. The complete molecule (around 400 kD) is composed of two four-chain units of IMMUNOGLOBULIN A, one SECRETORY COMPONENT and one J chain (IMMUNOGLOBULIN J-CHAINS).
IgA Deficiency definition: A dysgammaglobulinemia characterized by a deficiency of IMMUNOGLOBULIN A.
IgA binding definition: Interacting selectively with an immunoglobulin of an IgA isotype. [GOC:add, ISBN:0781735149 "Fundamental Immunology"]
isotype switching to IgA isotypes definition: The switching of activated B cells from IgM biosynthesis to biosynthesis of an IgA isotype, accomplished through a recombination process involving an intrachromosomal deletion between switch regions that reside 5' of the IgM and one of the IgA constant region gene segments in the immunoglobulin heavy chain locus. [ISBN:0781735149 "Fundamental Immunology", PMID:12370374, PMID:2113175, PMID:9186655]
