Fractures, Stress definition: Fractures due to the strain caused by repetitive exercise. They are thought to arise from a combination of MUSCLE FATIGUE and bone failure, and occur in situations where BONE REMODELING predominates over repair. The most common sites of stress fractures are the METATARSUS; FIBULA; TIBIA; and FEMORAL NECK.
Heat-Shock Proteins definition: Proteins which are synthesized in eukaryotic organisms and bacteria in response to hyperthermia and other environmental stresses. They increase thermal tolerance and perform functions essential to cell survival under these conditions.
heat shock protein definition: any of a group of proteins that are synthesized in response to hyperthermia, hypoxia, or other stresses and that are believed to enable cells to recover from these stresses, perhaps by enabling recovery of gene expression; occur in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and at least some proteins are similar in vertebrates and invertebrates.
Heat Shock Protein definition: A family of highly-conserved proteins that are synthesized in response to hyperthermia (heat shock), hypoxia, or other stresses that appear to increase cellular thermal tolerance and enable cells to recover from stress. Some heat shock proteins may protect other proteins from denaturation, degradation or perform functions essential to cell survival under these conditions.
Tension-Type Headache definition: A common primary headache disorder, characterized by a dull, non-pulsatile, diffuse, band-like (or vice-like) PAIN of mild to moderate intensity in the HEAD; SCALP; or NECK. The subtypes are classified by frequency and severity of symptoms. There is no clear cause even though it has been associated with MUSCLE CONTRACTION and stress. (International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd ed. Cephalalgia 2004: suppl 1)
stress definition: the biological response to noxious, demanding, or unpleasant stimuli or conditions; do not confuse stress with STRESSOR, which is the stimulus.
Stress, Mechanical definition: A purely physical condition which exists within any material because of strain or deformation by external forces or by non-uniform thermal expansion; expressed quantitatively in units of force per unit area.
mechanical stress definition: physical condition which exists within any material because of strain or deformation by external forces or by non-uniform thermal expansion.
Stress, Psychological definition: Stress wherein emotional factors predominate.
response to stress definition: A change in state or activity of a cell or an organism (in terms of movement, secretion, enzyme production, gene expression, etc.) as a result of a disturbance in organismal or cellular homeostasis, usually, but not necessarily, exogenous (e.g. temperature, humidity, ionizing radiation). [GOC:mah]
Oxidative Stress definition: A disturbance in the prooxidant-antioxidant balance in favor of the former, leading to potential damage. Indicators of oxidative stress include damaged DNA bases, protein oxidation products, and lipid peroxidation products (Sies, Oxidative Stress, 1991, pxv-xvi).
oxidative stress definition: damage to biological tissues caused by superoxide and other free radicals generated as a result of intoxication, antimicrobial cellular immunity, metabolic abnormality, or "normal" aging; do not confuse with HYPOXIA or HYPEROXIA.
Oxidative Stress definition: A disturbance in the prooxidant-antioxidant balance in favor of the former, leading to potential damage. Indicators of oxidative stress include damaged DNA bases, protein oxidation products, and lipid peroxidation products. The damage to biological tissues is caused by superoxide and other free radicals generated by many factors, including exposure to alcohol, medications, trauma, cold, toxins, and radiation or by antimicrobial cellular immunity, metabolic abnormality, or "normal" aging; not synonymous with hypoxia or hyperoxia. Oxidative stress promotes a range of degenerative disorders, including cancer, diabetes, premature aging, Alzheimer's, and many others.
Oxidative Stress definition: A condition in which antioxidant levels are lower than normal. Antioxidant levels are usually measured in blood plasma.
Heat Stress Disorders definition: A group of conditions due to overexposure to or overexertion in excess environmental temperature. It includes heat cramps, which are non-emergent and treated by salt replacement; HEAT EXHAUSTION, which is more serious, treated with fluid and salt replacement; and HEAT STROKE, a condition most commonly affecting extremes of age, especially the elderly, accompanied by convulsions, delusions, or coma and treated with cooling the body and replacement of fluids and salts. (From Segen, Dictionary of Modern Medicine, 1992)
Stress, Physiological definition: The unfavorable effect of environmental factors (stressors) on the physiological functions of an organism. Prolonged unresolved physiological stress can affect HOMEOSTASIS of the organism, and may lead to damaging or pathological conditions.
stress fiber definition: Bundle of microfilaments and other proteins found in fibroblasts. [ISBN:0124325653]
Stress Fibers definition: Bundles of actin filaments (MICROFILAMENTS) and myosin-II that span across the cell attaching to the cell membrane at FOCAL ADHESIONS and to the network of INTERMEDIATE FILAMENTS that surrounds the nucleus.
Echocardiography, Stress definition: A method of recording heart motion and internal structures by combining ultrasonic imaging with exercise testing (EXERCISE TEST) or pharmacologic stress.
shear stress definition: a stress resulting from the application of a force to a surface, in a direction parallel to that surface; it is given by the ratio of the magnitude of the force to the area of the surface over which it acts; it is the stress of gliding along each other or along the wall of the channel.
Genotoxic Stress definition: Exposure to DNA-damaging agents and subsequent energy expenditures by a cell to repair DNA damage. Genotoxic stress elicits biochemical responses that either enhance cell survival or lead to cell death. These biochemical responses include DNA-damage-inducible repair and increasing expression of a variety of proteins by both transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms. Genotoxic stresses frequently activate signal transduction pathways that originate in the cell membrane or cytoplasm, triggering similar phosphorylation cascades to those induced by the activation of cell-surface receptors.
