Adipose Tissue definition: Specialized connective tissue composed of fat cells (ADIPOCYTES). It is the site of stored FATS, usually in the form of TRIGLYCERIDES. In mammals, there are two types of adipose tissue, the WHITE FAT and the BROWN FAT. Their relative distributions vary in different species with most adipose tissue being white.
Adipose tissue definition: Dense irregular connective tissue, which predominantly consists of adipocytes.
adipose tissue definition: connective tissue composed of fat cells lodged in the meshes of areolar tissue.
Adipose tissue definition: Dense irregular connective tissue, which predominantly consists of adipocytes.
Adipose Tissue definition: A specialized form of connective tissue consisting primarily of adipocytes (fat cells), surrounded by a meshwork of collagen fibers.
brown fat definition: thermogenic type of adipose tissue containing a dark pigment, and arising during embryonic life in certain specific areas in many mammals, including man; prominent in the newborn of all species in which it occurs and remains a distinct and conspicuous tissue in the adults of certain species, especially those that hibernate.
Adipose Tissue, Brown definition: A thermogenic form of adipose tissue composed of BROWN ADIPOCYTES. It is found in newborns of many species including humans, and in hibernating mammals. Brown fat is richly vascularized, innervated, and densely packed with MITOCHONDRIA which can generate heat directly from the stored lipids.
Brown adipose tissue definition: Adipose tissue, cells of which contain multiple small lipid droplets.
Brown adipose tissue definition: Adipose tissue, cells of which contain multiple small lipid droplets.
Brown Adipose Tissue definition: Brown-colored adipose tissue that is present in higher concentrations in newborns and hibernating animals. It contains numerous small droplets of lipids and high numbers of mitochondria as its primary function is to generate body heat.
Adipocytes definition: Cells in the body that store FATS, usually in the form of TRIGLYCERIDES. WHITE ADIPOCYTES are the predominant type and found mostly in the abdominal cavity and subcutaneous tissue. BROWN ADIPOCYTES are thermogenic cells that can be found in newborns of some species and hibernating mammals.
adipocyte definition: fat-storing cells found mostly in the abdominal cavity and subcutaneous tissue.
Adipocyte definition: Fat-storing cells found mostly in the abdominal cavity and subcutaneous tissue. (MeSH)
Lipocyte definition: A fat storing cell.
Neoplasms, Adipose Tissue definition: Neoplasms composed of fatty tissue or connective tissue made up of fat cells in a meshwork of areolar tissue. The concept does not refer to neoplasms located in adipose tissue.
Lipomatous Neoplasm definition: A benign or malignant tumor composed of adipose (fatty) tissue. -- 2003
Subcutis definition: Adipose tissue located under the dermis. It binds underlying structures with the skin. The subcutis is important in the regulation of temperature of the skin itself and the body. The size of this layer varies throughout the body and from person to person.
Subcutaneous Fat definition: Fatty tissue under the SKIN through out the body.
Adipose Tissue Atrophy definition: Shrinking of adipose tissue.
Malignant Lipomatous Neoplasm definition: A malignant neoplasm arising from adipocytes.
Benign Lipomatous Neoplasm definition: A benign tumor composed of adipose (fatty) tissue. The most common representative of this category is the lipoma.
fat cell differentiation definition: The process whereby a relatively unspecialized cell acquires specialized features of an adipocyte, an animal connective tissue cell specialized for the synthesis and storage of fat. [GOC:go_curators, http://cancerweb.ncl.ac.uk/]
Intra-Abdominal Fat definition: Fatty tissue inside the ABDOMINAL CAVITY, including visceral fat and retroperitoneal fat. It is the most metabolically active fat in the body and easily accessible for LIPOLYSIS. Increased visceral fat is associated with metabolic complications of OBESITY.
Subcutaneous Fat, Abdominal definition: Fatty tissue under the SKIN in the region of the ABDOMEN.
Abdominal Fat definition: Fatty tissue in the region of the ABDOMEN. It includes the ABDOMINAL SUBCUTANEOUS FAT and the INTRA-ABDOMINAL FAT.
Adipose Tissue, White definition: Fatty tissue composed of WHITE ADIPOCYTES and generally found directly under the skin (SUBCUTANEOUS FAT) and around the internal organs (ABDOMINAL FAT). It has less vascularization and less coloration than the BROWN FAT. White fat provides heat insulation, mechanical cushion, and source of energy.
White adipose tissue definition: Adipose tissue, cells of which contain a single large lipid droplet.
White adipose tissue definition: Adipose tissue, cells of which contain a single large lipid droplet.
White Adipose Tissue definition: Adipose tissue that collects, stores and releases fat in the form of triglycerides. It functions as a heat insulator, mechanical cushion and as a source of energy. White adipose tissue is composed of adipocytes that secrete leptin and other substances that effect energy homeostasis. Its distribution in the body is dependent on the sex of the individual.
Adipocytes, Brown definition: Fat cells with dark coloration due to the densely packed MITOCHONDRIA. They contain numerous small lipid droplets or vacuoles. Their stored lipids can be converted directly to energy as heat by the mitochondria.
Adipocytes, White definition: Fat cells with light coloration and few MITOCHONDRIA. They contain a scant ring of CYTOPLASM surrounding a single large lipid droplet or vacuole.
Adipose-Derived Regenerative Cells definition: A population of cells derived from adipose tissue with stem cell and wound repair activities. Adipose-derived regenerative cells (ADRC) consists of several cell types several types, such as adult stem cells, vascular endothelial cells, and vascular smooth muscle cells, among others. These cells contribute to wound repair through a variety of mechanisms by promoting blood vessel growth and blocking apoptosis. In addition, ADRC can differentiate into several tissue types, such as bone, cartilage, fat, skeletal muscle, smooth muscle and cardiac muscle.
fat cell proliferation definition: The multiplication or reproduction of fat cells by cell division, resulting in the expansion of their population. A fat cell is an animal connective tissue cell specialized for the synthesis and storage of fat. [GOC:mah, GOC:sl]
brown fat cell proliferation definition: The multiplication or reproduction of brown fat cells by cell division, resulting in the expansion of their population. A brown fat cell is a fat cell found the thermogenic form of adipose tissue found in newborns of many species. [CL:0000449, GOC:mah, GOC:sl]
white fat cell proliferation definition: The multiplication or reproduction of white fat cells by cell division, resulting in the expansion of their population. [CL:0000448, GOC:mah, GOC:sl]
regulation of fat cell proliferation definition: Any process that modulates the frequency, rate or extent of fat cell proliferation. [GOC:mah, GOC:sl]
