Arbovirus Infections definition: Infections caused by arthropod-borne viruses, general or unspecified.
Arboviruses definition: Arthropod-borne viruses. A non-taxonomic designation for viruses that can replicate in both vertebrate hosts and arthropod vectors. Included are some members of the following families: ARENAVIRIDAE; BUNYAVIRIDAE; REOVIRIDAE; TOGAVIRIDAE; and FLAVIVIRIDAE. (From Dictionary of Microbiology and Molecular Biology, 2nd ed)
Arthropod Vectors definition: Arthropods, other than insects and arachnids, which transmit infective organisms from one host to another or from an inanimate reservoir to an animate host.
Arthropod Venoms definition: Venoms from animals of the phylum Arthropoda. Those most investigated are from scorpions and spiders of the class Arachnidae and from ant, bee, and wasp families of the Insecta order Hymenoptera. The venoms contain protein toxins, enzymes, and other bioactive substances and may be lethal to man.
arthropod poison definition: poison produced by arthropods, toxic to other living organisms.
Arthropods definition: Members of the phylum Arthropoda of the animal kingdom, composed of organisms having a hard, jointed exoskeleton and paired jointed legs, and including among other classes, the ARACHNIDA and INSECTS, many species of which are important medically as parasites or as vectors of organisms capable of causing disease in man. (Dorland, 27th ed)
Arthropoda definition: body is semented into 2 or 3 regions, with paired, segmented appendages, and a hardened body wall; periodically sheds and renews the exoskeleton.
Arthropoda definition: The taxonomic phylum whose members are invertebrates with hard exoskeletons and segmented joints. Organisms in this phylum include the Arachnids, Centipedes, Crustaceans, Insects and the extinct Trilobites.
epidemic encephalitis definition: infections of the brain caused by arthropod-borne viruses primarily from the families togaviridae, flaviviridae, bunyaviridae, reoviridae and rhabdoviridae; life cycles of these viruses are characterized by zoonoses, with birds and lower mammals serving as intermediate hosts; the virus is transmitted to humans by the bite of mosquitoes or ticks; clinical manifestations include fever, headache, alterations of mentation, focal neurologic deficits, and coma.
Encephalitis, Arbovirus definition: Infections of the brain caused by arthropod-borne viruses (i.e., arboviruses) primarily from the families TOGAVIRIDAE; FLAVIVIRIDAE; BUNYAVIRIDAE; REOVIRIDAE; and RHABDOVIRIDAE. Life cycles of these viruses are characterized by ZOONOSES, with birds and lower mammals serving as intermediate hosts. The virus is transmitted to humans by the bite of mosquitoes (CULICIDAE) or TICKS. Clinical manifestations include fever, headache, alterations of mentation, focal neurologic deficits, and COMA. (From Clin Microbiol Rev 1994 Jan;7(1):89-116; Walton, Brain's Diseases of the Nervous System, 10th ed, p321)
arthropod borne communicable disease definition: bacterial, viral, or parasitic diseases transmitted to humans and animals by infected arthropods, including ticks.
arthropod genetics definition: heredity, especially the mechanisms of hereditary transmission and the variation of inherited characteristics among arthropods; the genetic constitution of arthropods.
arthropod nonpollutant control definition: use of mechanisms, usually involving living organisms such as bacteria, for the reduction or regulation of the population of noxious, destructive, or dangerous arthropods; environmental concerns have focused attention on natural forms of disease control as potentially safe and effective alternatives to chemical insecticides leading to increased efforts to develop control strategies that rely on natural predators and parasites or that involve genetically engineered microbial pest control agents.
larval lymph gland hemocyte differentiation definition: The process whereby a relatively unspecialized cell derived from the larval lymph gland acquires the specialized features of a mature hemocyte. The lymph gland consists of three to six bilaterally paired lobes that are attached to the cardioblasts during larval stages, and it degenerates during pupal stages. Hemocytes are blood cells associated with a hemocoel (the cavity containing most of the major organs of the arthropod body) which are involved in defense and clotting of hemolymph, but not involved in transport of oxygen. [GOC:bf, GOC:mtg_sensu, PMID:14602069]
hemocyte proliferation definition: The multiplication or reproduction of hemocytes, resulting in the expansion of the cell population. Hemocytes are blood cells associated with a hemocoel (the cavity containing most of the major organs of the arthropod body) which are involved in defense and clotting of hemolymph, but not involved in transport of oxygen. [GOC:bf, GOC:mtg_sensu]
hemocyte differentiation definition: The process whereby a relatively unspecialized cell acquires the characteristics of a mature hemocyte. Hemocytes are blood cells associated with a hemocoel (the cavity containing most of the major organs of the arthropod body) which are involved in defense and clotting of hemolymph, but not involved in transport of oxygen. [GOC:jl, GOC:mtg_sensu, http://cancerweb.ncl.ac.uk/, PMID:9550723]
hemocyte development definition: The process whose specific outcome is the progression of the hemocyte over time, from its formation to the mature structure. Hemocytes are blood cells associated with a hemocoel (the cavity containing most of the major organs of the arthropod body) which are involved in defense and clotting of hemolymph, but not involved in transport of oxygen. [GOC:bf, GOC:mtg_sensu]
Compound Eye, Arthropod definition: Light sensory organ in ARTHROPODS consisting of a large number of ommatidia, each functioning as an independent photoreceptor unit.
arthropod definition: Arthropode.
