Acholeplasma definition: A genus of gram-negative organisms including saprophytic and parasitic or pathogenic species.
Bacteria definition: One of the three domains of life (the others being Eukarya and ARCHAEA), also called Eubacteria. They are unicellular prokaryotic microorganisms which generally possess rigid cell walls, multiply by cell division, and exhibit three principal forms: round or coccal, rodlike or bacillary, and spiral or spirochetal. Bacteria can be classified by their response to OXYGEN: aerobic, anaerobic, or facultatively anaerobic; by the mode by which they obtain their energy: chemotrophy (via chemical reaction) or PHOTOTROPHY (via light reaction); for chemotrophs by their source of chemical energy: CHEMOLITHOTROPHY (from inorganic compounds) or chemoorganotrophy (from organic compounds); and by their source for CARBON; NITROGEN; etc.; HETEROTROPHY (from organic sources) or AUTOTROPHY (from CARBON DIOXIDE). They can also be classified by whether or not they stain (based on the structure of their CELL WALLS) with CRYSTAL VIOLET dye: gram-negative or gram-positive.

bacteria definition: A large group of single-cell microorganisms. Some cause infections and disease in animals and humans. The singular of bacteria is bacterium.
Bacteria definition: Unicellular, prokaryotic organisms that reproduce by cell division and usually have cell walls; can be shaped like spheres, rods or spirals and can be found in virtually any environment.
aerobic bacteria definition: see RTs for specific organisms.
anaerobic bacteria definition: see RTs for specific organisms.
Bacterial Count definition: The quantitative determination of bacterial populations. The two most widely used methods for determining bacterial numbers are: 1) the standard, or viable, plate count method and 2) spectrophotometric (turbidimetric) analysis.
Bacteria definition: A measurement of the bacteria in a biological specimen.
Bacteroides definition: genus of gram negative, anaerobic, rod shaped bacteria; its organisms are normal inhabitants of the oral, respiratory, intestinal, and urogenital cavities of humans, animals, and insects; some species may be pathogenic.
Bacteroides definition: A genus of gram-negative, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria. Its organisms are normal inhabitants of the oral, respiratory, intestinal, and urogenital cavities of humans, animals, and insects. Some species may be pathogenic.
Bacteroides definition: A genus of bacteria within the phylum Bacteroidetes consisting of gram-negative bacilli or cocco-bacilli that comprise a major portion of the human normal flora, predominating in the intestinal tract.
Borrelia definition: causes borreliosis in man; helical rod with 3-10 coarse uneven coils and bent or hooked ends; gram negative; unique motility by a flexing motion of the cell; transmited to man by the human louse or various species of ticks.
Borrelia definition: A genus of gram-negative, anaerobic, helical bacteria, various species of which produce RELAPSING FEVER in humans and other animals.
Enterobacteriaceae definition: family of gram negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod shaped bacteria that do not form endospores; organisms are distributed worldwide with some being saprophytes and others being plant and animal parasites; many species are of considerable economic importance due to their pathogenic effects on agriculture and livestock.

enteric bacteria definition: see RTs for specific organisms.
Myxococcales definition: order of rod shaped, gram negative fruiting gliding bacteria found in soil, water and humus.
Myxococcales definition: An order of rod-shaped, gram-negative fruiting gliding bacteria found in SOIL; WATER; and HUMUS.
Paracoccus definition: Gram-negative non-motile bacteria found in soil or brines.
Rhodopseudomonas definition: genus of gram negative, rod shaped, phototrophic bacteria found in aquatic environments; internal photosynthetic membranes are present as lamellae underlying the cytoplasmic membrane.
Rhodopseudomonas definition: A genus of gram-negative, rod-shaped, phototrophic bacteria found in aquatic environments. Internal photosynthetic membranes are present as lamellae underlying the cytoplasmic membrane.
Salmonella arizonae definition: Gram-negative rods widely distributed in LIZARDS and SNAKES, and implicated in enteric, bone (BONE DISEASES), and joint infections (JOINT DISEASES) in humans.
Counters, Bacteria definition: Devices that provide a lighted surface on which bacteria colonies can be counted accurately. The surface divides the agar plate into grids so that the operator can count the colonies in each grid and keep track of which CFUs have already been counted.
Filters, Bacteria definition: Filters designed to retain bacteria from a circulating current of fluid (gas, liquid, or both); some filters can also retain several types of viruses. Bacteria filters can retain very small particulates; they are intended for uses such as filtering inspiratory gases in patient care devices (e.g., ventilators, tracheostomy tubes), especially in patients whose upper respiratory tract has been bypassed; avoiding cross-contamination between isolated patients and the environment; and filtering inspired air in biological (chemical) masks used in contaminated areas. Bacteria filters are also used in water purification processes. Dedicated bacteria filters are available in a variety of shapes and sizes; they may include connectors for attachment to devices such as masks and ventilation systems.
Analyzers, Laboratory, Microbiology definition: Laboratory analyzers designed to detect the presence of, identify, and/or evaluate the in vitro (e.g., in body fluids or cultures) susceptibility of a pathogen to antimicrobial agents. The results derived from these analyzers are used for diagnosis and/or to determine the proper antimicrobial agent for a patient's treatment.
Kingella definition: A genus of gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacteria whose organisms are part of the normal flora of the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract. Some species are pathogenic for man.
bacteria characteristic definition: characteristics or classification systems of bacteria; includes staining patterns, oxygen requirements, and nutrient requirements.
oral bacteria definition: see RTs for specific organisms.

Proteobacteria definition: A phylum of bacteria consisting of the purple bacteria and their relatives which form a branch of the eubacterial tree. This group of predominantly gram-negative bacteria is classified based on homology of equivalent nucleotide sequences of 16S ribosomal RNA or by hybridization of ribosomal RNA or DNA with 16S and 23S ribosomal RNA.

Lawsonia Bacteria definition: A genus of gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacteria causing a proliferative enteritis in animals, especially pigs, deer, horses, and rabbits.
Reagents, Microbiology, Stain, Bacteria definition: Microbiology stains used for artificial coloration of bacteria, mostly for direct visual or microscopic identification. Staining is typically performed using dyes that permit the classification of bacteria in big groups (i.e., differentiation stains, such as Gram's and acid-fast stains) or to identify species in particular
coryneform bacteria definition: gram-positive, primarily aerobic bacteria that occur as irregularly shaped rods and tend to form branching filaments.
Gallionellaceae definition: A family of gram-negative bacteria in the order Nitrosomonadales, class BETAPROTEOBACTERIA. It contains a single genus Gallionella.
