Benzene definition: Toxic, volatile, flammable liquid hydrocarbon byproduct of coal distillation. It is used as an industrial solvent in paints, varnishes, lacquer thinners, gasoline, etc. Benzene causes central nervous system damage acutely and bone marrow damage chronically and is carcinogenic. It was formerly used as parasiticide.
benzene definition: toxic, volatile, flammable liquid hydrocarbon biproduct of coal distillation; structure consists of a closed hexagonal chain of six carbon atoms, each attached to a hydrogen atom and attached to each other by alternating single and double (resonating) bonds; in benzene derivatives, one or more of the hydrogen atoms are replaced by other atoms or radicals.
Benzene definition: A clear, colorless, highly flammable and volatile, liquid aromatic hydrocarbon with a gasoline-like odor. Benzene is found in crude oils and as a by-product of oil-refining processes. In industry benzene is used as a solvent, as a chemical intermediate, and is used in the synthesis of numerous chemicals. Exposure to this substance causes neurological symptoms and affects the bone marrow causing aplastic anemia, excessive bleeding and damage to the immune system. Benzene is a known human carcinogen and is linked to an increased risk of developing lymphatic and hematopoietic cancers, acute myelogenous leukemia, as well as chronic lymphocytic leukemia. (NCI05)
Lindane definition: An organochlorine insecticide that has been used as a pediculicide and a scabicide. It has been shown to cause cancer.
lindane definition: gamma isomer of benzene hexachloride, a carcinogenic insecticide more potent than DDT (chlorophenothane); it is used to kill lice and mites, applied topically to the skin.
Lindane definition: The gamma-isomer of benzene hexachloride, a colorless to white colored, synthetic, crystalline solid with a slight musty odor that emits toxic fumes of hydrochloric acid and other chlorinated compounds when heated to decomposition. Lindane is used as an insecticide for hardwood logs, lumber, and crops. Lindane also has topical pediculicide and scabicide activities probably due to its neurotoxic effects. Inhalation exposure to this substance causes severe irritation of the nose and throat, causes anemia, and affects the liver, nervous, cardiovascular, and immune system. Lindane is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.
Hexachlorobenzene definition: An agricultural fungicide and seed treatment agent.
hexachlorobenzene definition: agricultural fungicide and seed treatment agent.
Hexachlorobenzene definition: A stable, white, crystalline chlorinated hydrocarbon that emits very toxic fumes of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrochloric acid and other chlorinated compounds when heated to decomposition. Hexachlorobenzene was used as a fungicide and was also used as a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of dyes, synthesis of organic chemicals, rubber and in wood preservation. Prolonged oral exposure to this substance results in a liver disease with associated skin lesions. Hexachlorobenzene is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen based on association between thyroid, liver and kidney cancer and oral exposure in animals. (NCI05)
Picryl Chloride definition: A hapten that generates suppressor cells capable of down-regulating the efferent phase of trinitrophenol-specific contact hypersensitivity. (Arthritis Rheum 1991 Feb;34(2):180).
Styrene definition: A colorless, toxic liquid with a strong aromatic odor. It is used to make rubbers, polymers and copolymers, and polystyrene plastics.
Toluene definition: A widely used industrial solvent.
toluene definition: methylbenzene; organic solvent used in rubber and plastic cements, paint removers, etc; poisoning may result from ingestion or inhalation.
Toluene 2,4-Diisocyanate definition: Skin irritant and allergen used in the manufacture of polyurethane foams and other elastomers.
Trinitrotoluene definition: A 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, which is an explosive chemical that can cause skin irritation and other toxic consequences.
1,3 benzodioxole definition: formula is C7H6O2; synonyms include: (methylenedioxy)benzene; o-methylenedioxybenzene; benzodioxole; 1,2-(methylenedioxy)benzene; 1,3-dioxaindan; 1,3-dioxindan; 3,4-methylenedioxybenzene.
Benzotrichloride definition: An oily, unstable, colorless, chlorinated hydrocarbon with a penetrating odor. Benzotrichloride is used extensively as a chemical intermediate in industry for the preparation of dyes. Its derivatives are used as UV stabilizers in plastic and to manufacture antiseptics and antimicrobial agents. In the presence of moisture, its hydrolyzed vapors (benzoic acid and hydrochloric acid) are highly irritating to the skin and mucous membranes in humans. Benzotrichloride is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen. (NCI05)
Diglycidyl Resorcinol Ether definition: A combustible, yellowish liquid with a slight phenolic odor. Diglycidyl resorcinol ether is used as a liquid spray epoxy resin and in the production of other epoxy resins. Exposure to this substance irritates the eyes, skin and respiratory tract and adversely affects the immune system, central nervous system, liver and gastrointestinal tract. This substance is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen based on evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals. (NCI05)
phenethyl isothiocyanate definition: Phenethyl isothiocyanate. A naturally occurring compound found in some cruciferous vegetables. It is being studied as an agent to prevent cancer.
phenethyl isothiocyanate definition: PEITC. A naturally occurring compound found in some cruciferous vegetables. It is being studied as an agent to prevent cancer.
Phenethyl Isothiocyanate definition: An isothiocyanate found in cruciferous vegetables with chemopreventive and potential antitumor activities. Although the mechanism of action is unclear, phenethyl Isothiocyanate (PEITC) was shown to induce apoptosis in tumor cells, possibly mediated through its metabolic intermediates, reactive oxygen species (ROS). PEITC also is able to activate ERK and JNK signal transduction, which in turn induces expression of stress-responsive genes. Specifically, this agent has been shown to reactivate gene expression of a detoxification enzyme, glutathione S-transferase that is silenced in prostate carcinoma.
(hydroxyamino)benzene mutase activity definition: Catalysis of the reaction: (hydroxyamino)benzene = 2-aminophenol. [EC:5.4.4.1, UM-BBD_enzymeID:e0246]
benzene metabolic process definition: The chemical reactions and pathways involving benzene, C6H6, a volatile, very inflammable liquid, contained in the naphtha produced by the destructive distillation of coal, from which it is separated by fractional distillation. [GOC:ai, http://cancerweb.ncl.ac.uk/]
a-Hexachlorocyclohexane definition: A brownish-white colored, sand-like powder with a phosgene-like odor that emits toxic fumes of phosgene gas, hydrochloric acid and other chlorinated compounds when heated to decomposition. a-Hexachlorocyclohexane is the alpha-isomer of hexachlorocyclohexane and is used as an insecticide to treat lice and scabies. Inhalation exposure to this substance causes severe irritation of the nose, throat and lungs; causes anemia, and affects the liver, kidneys, nervous system, cardiovascular system and immune system. a-Hexachlorocyclohexane is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen. (NCI05)
