Activity Cycles definition: Bouts of physical irritability or movement alternating with periods of quiescence. It includes biochemical activity and hormonal activity which may be cellular. These cycles are shorter than 24 hours and include sleep-wakefulness cycles and the periodic activation of the digestive system.

Canonically, the cell cycle comprises the replication and segregation of genetic material followed by the division of the cell, but in endocycles or syncytial cells nuclear replication or nuclear division may not be followed by cell division. tricarboxylic acid cycle definition: A nearly universal metabolic pathway in which the acetyl group of acetyl coenzyme A is effectively oxidized to two CO2 and four pairs of electrons are transferred to coenzymes. The acetyl group combines with oxaloacetate to form citrate, which undergoes successive transformations to isocitrate, 2-oxoglutarate, succinyl-CoA, succinate, fumarate, malate, and oxaloacetate again, thus completing the cycle. In eukaryotes the tricarboxylic acid is confined to the mitochondria. See also glyoxylate cycle. [ISBN:0198506732 "Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology"]

Life Cycle Stages definition: The continuous sequence of changes undergone by metamorphosing insects and other animals during the post-embryonic development process.
Menstrual Cycle definition: The period from onset of one menstrual bleeding (MENSTRUATION) to the next in an ovulating woman or female primate. The menstrual cycle is regulated by endocrine interactions of the HYPOTHALAMUS; the PITUITARY GLAND; the ovaries; and the genital tract. The menstrual cycle is divided by OVULATION into two phases. Based on the endocrine status of the OVARY, there is a FOLLICULAR PHASE and a LUTEAL PHASE. Based on the response in the ENDOMETRIUM, the menstrual cycle is divided into a proliferative and a secretory phase.
menstrual cycle definition: period from onset of one menstrual bleeding to the next in an ovulating woman or female primate.
Menstrual Cycle definition: The Menstrual Cycle involves regularly recurring hormonal changes and physiologic endometrial changes during the reproductive period in human females, and some primates, and culminates in partial sloughing of the endometrium (menstruation) in the absence of fertilization. For most women, one cycle takes 28 days. (NCI)
Menstrual Cycle definition: (MEN-stroo-al) The monthly cycle of hormonal changes from the beginning of one menstrual period to the beginning of the next.
Oxidative Phosphorylation definition: Electron transfer through the cytochrome system liberating free energy which is transformed into high-energy phosphate bonds.
oxidative phosphorylation definition: electron transfer through the cytochrome system liberating free energy which is transformed into high-energy phosphate bonds.
oxidative phosphorylation definition: The phosphorylation of ADP to ATP that accompanies the oxidation of a metabolite through the operation of the respiratory chain. Oxidation of compounds establishes a proton gradient across the membrane, providing the energy for ATP synthesis. [ISBN:0198506732 "Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology", ISBN:0471331309 "Biochemical Pathways"]
Endometrial Cycle definition: The cyclic cellular, histological, and functional changes in the ENDOMETRIUM during the MENSTRUAL CYCLE in response to the changing endocrine environment.
Ovarian Cycle definition: The cyclic cellular, histological, and functional changes in the OVARY during the MENSTRUAL CYCLE in response to the changing endocrine environment.
Estrous Cycle definition: The period of cyclic physiological and behavior changes in non-primate female mammals that exhibit ESTRUS. The estrous cycle generally consists of 4 or 5 distinct periods corresponding to the endocrine status (PROESTRUS; ESTRUS; METESTRUS; DIESTRUS; and ANESTRUS).
centrosome cycle definition: The cell cycle process whereby centrosome duplication and separation takes place. The centrosome cycle can operate with a considerable degree of independence from other processes of the cell cycle. [ISBN:0815316194]
mitotic cell cycle definition: Progression through the phases of the mitotic cell cycle, the most common eukaryotic cell cycle, which canonically comprises four successive phases called G1, S, G2, and M and includes replication of the genome and the subsequent segregation of chromosomes into daughter cells. In some variant cell cycles nuclear replication or nuclear division may not be followed by cell division, or G1 and G2 phases may be absent. [GOC:mah, ISBN:0815316194, Reactome:69278]
Cell Cycle definition: The complex series of phenomena, occurring between the end of one cell division and the end of the next, by which cellular material is divided between daughter cells. The cell cycle is an ordered set of events, culminating in cell growth and division into two daughter cells. The stages of cell cycle includes G1-S-G2-M. The G1 stage stands for "GAP 1". The S stage stands for "Synthesis". This is the stage when DNA replication occurs. The G2 stage stands for "GAP 2". The M stage stands for "mitosis", and is when nuclear (chromosomes separate) and cytoplasmic (cytokinesis) division occur.
glyoxylate cycle definition: A modification of the TCA cycle occurring in some plants and microorganisms, in which isocitrate is cleaved to glyoxylate and succinate. Glyoxylate can then react with acetyl-CoA to form malate. [ISBN:0198506732 "Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology"]
reductive pentose-phosphate cycle definition: The fixation of carbon dioxide (CO2) as glucose in the chloroplasts of C3 plants; uses ATP and NADPH formed in the light reactions of photosynthesis; carbon dioxide reacts with ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (catalyzed by the function of ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase) to yield two molecules of 3-phosphoglycerate; these are then phosphorylated by ATP to 1,3-bisphosphateglyceraldehyde which, in turn, is then reduced by NADPH to glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate. The glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate is converted to fructose 5-phosphate and ribulose 5-phosphate by aldolase and other enzymes; the ribulose 5-phosphate is phosphorylated by ATP to ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate. [ISBN:0198547684]

carbon fixation by 3-hydroxypropionate cycle definition: An autotrophic carbon dioxide fixation pathway by which two molecules of carbon dioxide are fixed to form glyoxylate. Acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA) is assumed to be converted to malate, and two CO2 molecules are thereby fixed. Malyl-CoA is thought to be cleaved to acetyl-CoA, the starting molecule, and glyoxylate, the carbon fixation product. [GOC:jl, PMID:11418572, PMID:15838028]
