Amplifiers, Electronic definition: Electronic devices that increase the magnitude of a signal's power level or current.
Automatic Data Processing definition: Data processing largely performed by automatic means.
automated data processing definition: data processing performed by automatic means; typically by computer.
Electronic Mail definition: Messages between computer users via COMPUTER COMMUNICATION NETWORKS. This feature duplicates most of the features of paper mail, such as forwarding, multiple copies, and attachments of images and other file types, but with a speed advantage. The term also refers to an individual message sent in this way.
E-mail definition: E-mail is short for "electronic mail" and refers to composing, sending, and receiving messages over electronic communication systems. Most e-mail systems use the Internet.
Electronics definition: The study, control, and application of the conduction of ELECTRICITY through gases or vacuum, or through semiconducting or conducting materials. (McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 6th ed)
electronic pacemaker definition: device designed to stimulate, by electric impulses, contraction of the heart muscles; it may be temporary (external) or permanent (internal or internal-external).
Balances, Electronic definition: Balances that include an electronic circuit that senses the deviation of the balance beam from the equilibrium point (e.g., a strain gauge sensor) and applies a restoring electromagnetic force, usually through a solenoid or torque motor. Typically, the current required to produce the balancing force in units of weight is displayed on a digital display. Most electronic balances include automatic calibration, temperature change compensation, and taring capability for easy subtraction of the mass of the container. Electronic balances frequently include a built-in interface so that they can communicate with printers, computers, and data-processing units.
Calipers, Skinfold, Electronic definition: Skinfold calipers designed to assess body fat in subcutaneous adipose tissue by measuring the skinfold thickness and processing the data electronically. Measurement of the thickness of folds of skin gathered at various areas of the body is displayed on the device. These instruments are typically electrically powered (usually with batteries), handheld, pistol-like metallic and/or rigid plastic calipers with curved working ends that apply even pressure to the skinfold. Electronic skinfold calipers help to perform fast and repetitive measurements on the posterior aspect of the upper arm, thighs, or back or over the lower ribs; the instruments typically show the results as percent body fat (e.g., using an standard algorithm such as the Jackson-Pollack formula) in a digital display.
Sphygmomanometers, Electronic definition: Sphygmomanometers designed for noninvasive measurement of blood pressure. These electronic devices include sound, pressure, volume, displacement, or other pressure-dependent variable sensors placed externally on the arteries; a transducer for conversion into an electric signal; and an electronic unit that converts and displays the signals as blood pressure values. Electronic sphygmomanometers that measure blood pressure by detecting and transducing blood sound turbulences (Korotkoff sounds) and/or air pressure fluctuations (i.e., auscultatory and oscillometric measurements) are available; other instruments may use different techniques (e.g., plethysmography). Electronic sphygmomanometers are used mainly for routine blood pressure measurement in hospital outpatient departments, doctor's offices, and other healthcare facilities; they are not usually intended to monitor or record blood pressure. Devices intended for either manual or automatic cuff inflation are available.
STETHOSCOPE, ELECTRONIC definition: (a) A manual stethoscope is a mechanical device used to project the sounds associated with the heart, arteries, and veins and other internal organs. (b) An electronic stethoscope is an electrically amplified device used to project the sounds associated with the heart, arteries, and veins and other internal organs.
THERMOMETER, ELECTRONIC, CLINICAL definition: A clinical electronic thermometer is a device used to measure the body temperature of a patient by means of a transducer coupled with an electronic signal amplification, conditioning, and display unit. The transducer may be in a detachable probe with or without a disposable cover.
Thermometers, Electronic definition: Thermometers that include an electronic device and attached sensors that detect and transduce changes in temperature into variations of some electric characteristic (e.g., resistance, voltage). These variations of the electric characteristics are processed in electronic circuits and, in turn, displayed as temperature readings.
Database definition: An information set with a regular structure. Although it can be applied to any set of information the term was invented to refer to computerized data, and is used almost exclusively in computing.
brain electronic stimulator definition: device for passing electrical current through a circuit in which the current evokes or elicits action (response) in the brain.
electronic spectra definition: emission or absorption of specific wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation during changes in the electron configurations of atoms, ions, or molecules.
electronic stimulator definition: device for passing electrical current through a circuit; current evokes or elicits action (response) in a muscle, gland, nerve or other excitable tissue.
Electronic Document definition: Material recorded in a format that requires an electronic device to view or modify the content.
Balances, Electronic, Analytic definition: Electronic balances designed for weighing with a high degree of accuracy and precision. These balances typically have a weighing range of up to 200 g (some are capable of measuring up to 300 or 400 g), with a readability of 0.01 to 0.1 mg and a reproducibility of 0.1 mg or better. Analytic electronic balances usually include an integrated or separate weighing chamber, and some have motorized doors.
Balances, Electronic, Microanalytic definition: Electronic balances designed to weigh, with a high degree of precision, substances with a very small mass; the balances can typically register weights of between 5 and 20 grams with a readability and reproducibility of one microgram or better. These balances typically consist of an electronic unit that senses the deviation of the balance beam and applies a restoring electromagnetic force, processing and control circuits, and a digital display that shows the value of the balancing force calibrated in units of weight. Balances usually incorporate automatic calibration, temperature change compensation, and taring capability for easy subtraction of the mass of the container. Microanalytical balances with integral interface circuits to communicate with printers, computers, and data processing units are also available.
Balances, Electronic, Precision definition: Electronic balances designed for general measurement in the clinical laboratory. These balances typically have weighing capacities in different ranges from several hundred milligrams to about 30 kg, a readability of 1 to 10 mg, and a reproducibility of 1 to 50 mg, according to the weighing range. Precision electronic balances typically include a pan or platform on their top for weighing (i.e., toploading balances).
