Cell Fusion definition: Fusion of somatic cells in vitro or in vivo, which results in somatic cell hybridization.
Cell Fusion definition: A technique to form a single hybrid cell, by fusion of two or more dissimilar cells, either spontaneously or by induced fusion. The cells fuse and coalesce, but their nuclei may remain separated. The cell fusion technique can be used as a method of assigning genes to specific chromosomes.
Flicker Fusion definition: The point or frequency at which all flicker of an intermittent light stimulus disappears.
Fused Teeth definition: Two teeth united during development by the union of their tooth germs; the teeth may be joined by the enamel of their crowns, by their root dentin, or by both.
Membrane Fusion definition: The adherence and merging of cell membranes, intracellular membranes, or artificial membranes to each other or to viruses, parasites, or interstitial particles through a variety of chemical and physical processes.
membrane fusion definition: adherence and merging of cell membranes, intracellular membranes, or artificial membranes to each other or to viruses, parasites, or interstitial particles through a variety of chemical and physical processes.
membrane fusion definition: The joining of two lipid bilayers to form a single membrane. [GOC:mah]
Nuclear Fusion definition: Thermonuclear reaction in which the nuclei of an element of low atomic weight unite under extremely high temperature and pressure to form a nucleus of a heavier atom.
Spinal Fusion definition: Operative immobilization or ankylosis of two or more vertebrae by fusion of the vertebral bodies with a short bone graft or often with diskectomy or laminectomy. (From Blauvelt & Nelson, A Manual of Orthopaedic Terminology, 5th ed, p236; Dorland, 28th ed)
spinal fusion definition: operative immobilization or ankylosis of two or more vertebrae, often with diskectomy or laminectomy.
chimeric protein definition: genetically engineered proteins created from fusion genes representing 2 or more proteins or species, such as toxins fused to cell-specific antibodies, or chromophores fused to DNA-binding proteins.
fusion protein definition: A protein created by joining two genes together. Fusion proteins may occur naturally or can be created in the laboratory for research.
Fusion Protein definition: A protein in which the coding region of two genes have become in-frame and co-continuous. Fusion proteins can be formed by chromosomal breakage and/or recombination and also can be experimentally created using recombinant DNA techniques.
Gene Fusion definition: Typically the result of translocation, a Gene Fusion involves the union of segments from two previously discrete genes to form a new genetic unit with altered functional characteristics.
Gene Fusion definition: The GENETIC RECOMBINATION of the parts of two or more GENES resulting in a gene with different or additional regulatory regions, or a new chimeric gene product. ONCOGENE FUSION includes an ONCOGENE as at least one of the fusion partners and such gene fusions are often detected in neoplastic cells and are transcribed into ONCOGENE FUSION PROTEINS. ARTIFICIAL GENE FUSION is carried out in vitro by RECOMBINANT DNA technology.
fusion failure definition: congenital defects of closure of one or more vertebral arches, which may be associated with malformations of the spinal cord, nerve roots, congenital fibrous bands, lipomas, and congenital cysts.
mitochondrial fusion definition: Merging of two or more mitochondria within a cell to form a single compartment. [PMID:11038192]
karyogamy definition: The creation of a single nucleus from multiple nuclei as a result of fusing the lipid bilayers that surround each nuclei. [GOC:elh]
nuclear fusion during karyogamy definition: OBSOLETE. The fusion of two haploid nuclei to form a single diploid nucleus, as seen in the yeast mating process. [PMID:9442101]
pronuclear fusion definition: The merging of two pronuclei in a fertilized egg to fuse and produce a single zygotic genome. [GOC:ems, ISBN:087969307X]
myoblast fusion definition: A process whereby non-proliferating myoblasts fuse to existing fibers or to myotubes to form new fibers. A myoblast is a mononucleate cell type that, by fusion with other myoblasts, gives rise to the myotubes that eventually develop into skeletal muscle fibers. [CL:0000056, GOC:mtg_muscle, http://cancerweb.ncl.ac.uk/]
cell fusion definition: fusion of somatic cells in vitro or in vivo, which results in somatic cell hybridization.
organelle fusion definition: The creation of a single organelle from two or more organelles. [GOC:jic]
vesicle fusion definition: OBSOLETE (was not defined before being made obsolete). [GOC:go_curators]
vesicle fusion definition: Fusion of the membrane of a transport vesicle with its target membrane. [GOC:jic]
Fusion Toxin definition: A receptor-targeted complex comprised of a truncated toxin fused to a hormone, growth factor, or immunologic agent (i.e. antibody) that binds to the tumor cell allowing the toxin to kill the cell following internalization.
tube fusion definition: The joining of specific branches of a tubular system to form a continuous network. [GOC:bf]
fusion gene definition: artificial constructs composed of DNA fragments of different genes; used in gene structure-function studies, experimental gene therapies, and in the field of biotechnology.
Fusion Gene definition: A hybrid gene created by joining portions of two different genes (to produce a new protein) or by joining a gene to a different promoter (to alter or regulate gene transcription). These can be created by chromosomal aberration or by laboratory methods.
Oncogene Fusion definition: The GENETIC RECOMBINATION of the parts of two or more GENES, including an ONCOGENE as at least one of the fusion partners. Such gene fusions are often detected in neoplastic cells and are transcribed into ONCOGENE FUSION PROTEINS.
Gene Fusion Abnormality definition: Fusion of two genes or segments of genes that were previously separated prior to a mutation abnormality such as translocation. A gene fusion abnormality results in the formation of a new genetic unit that typically exhibits altered functional characteristics. This type of mutation abnormality can be either heritable or occur somatically.
macrophage fusion definition: The binding and fusion of a macrophage to one or more other cells to form a multinucleated cell. [GOC:sl]
