mucin/peptide definition: A protein/sugar compound made by some cancer cells.
Mucin-1 definition: Carbohydrate antigen elevated in patients with tumors of the breast, ovary, lung, and prostate as well as other disorders. The mucin is expressed normally by most glandular epithelia but shows particularly increased expression in the breast at lactation and in malignancy. It is thus an established serum marker for breast cancer.
MUC-1 antigen definition: MUC-1 antigen is a mammary-type apomucin, a high molecular weight transmembrane glycoprotein, of which the extracellular domain is formed by a repeating 20 amino acid sequence (in tandem) with a high content of serine and threonine on which are O-linked carbohydrate chains. MUC-1 synthesis and secretion are features of glandular epithelial tissues, and is overexpressed in lactating breast and in breast, ovary, lung, and prostate malignancies. MUC-1 Antigen definition: A cancer vaccine comprised of a synthetic peptide derived from the mucin 1 (MUC-1) antigen with potential antineoplastic activity. Upon administration, MUC-1 peptide vaccine may stimulate the host immune system to mount a cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) response against tumor cells positive for the MUC-1 antigen, resulting in decreased tumor growth. Overexpressed on many tumor cells, MUC-1 antigen, a mammary-type apomucin, is a high-molecular-weight transmembrane glycoprotein.
Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA Technique definition: Technique that utilizes low-stringency polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification with single primers of arbitrary sequence to generate strain-specific arrays of anonymous DNA fragments. RAPD technique may be used to determine taxonomic identity, assess kinship relationships, analyze mixed genome samples, and create specific probes.
Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia definition: A ventricular tachycardia in which the ventricular activation sequence is variable. The morphology of the electrocardiographic waveform is variable and is referred to as polymorphic.
VENTRICULAR TACHYCARDIA, POLYMORPHIC definition: A ventricular tachycardia in which the ventricular activation sequence is variable. The morphology of the electrocardiographic waveform is variable and is referred to as polymorphic. (NCI)
Polymorphic Microsatellite Marker definition: Short repeats of nucleotide sequences present throughout the genome which exhibit variations within a population.
MUC1 Gene definition: This gene plays a role in cellular signal transduction and is used as a biomarker for breast cancer.
Androgen Receptor definition: Encoded by human AR Gene (NR3 Family), the Androgen Receptor transcription factor regulates gene expression, cell proliferation, and differentiation. AR has 3 domains: N-terminal modulating (exon 1), DNA-binding (two C4 Zinc fingers, exons 2-3), and C-terminal hormone-binding (5 remaining exons). Polymorphic N-terminal poly-Gln tracts bind RAN, enhancing transactivation; decreased with increased poly-Gln length. An 87-kD (AR-A) isoform lacks a normal N-terminus, seen in the 110 kD (AR-B) form; A and B may differ in function. Ligand bound receptor translocates to the nucleus, homodimerizes, binds DNA, and stimulates transcription. Polyglutamine expansion causes Kennedy's disease. Other mutations are associated with androgen insensibility syndrome. (from LocusLink, Swiss-Prot, OMIM, and NCI)
Mucin 1 definition: Expressed as alternative isoforms in some hematopoietic cells and most glandular and ductal epithelial cells by human MUC1 Gene, highly glycosylated Mucin-1 is a type I membrane protein (major form) containing a large extracellular tandem repeat domain and a SEA domain. The number of repeats is highly polymorphic. MUC1 may protect epithelial surfaces, play a role in adhesion, cell-cell interactions, signaling, and metastasis. MUC1 may interact directly or indirectly with the actin cytoskeleton. Isoforms 5 and 9 are secreted. Isoform 7 behaves as a receptor and binds isoform 5; binding induces phosphorylation of isoform 7, alters cell morphology, and initiates cell signaling. MUC1 can bind to GRB2. Cleaved isoform 1 forms a heterodimer with its secreted C-terminal peptide. Isoforms 1 and 7 are transphosphorylated on serine and tyrosine residues.
Multiform Cell Layer of the Cerebral Cortex definition: The innermost layer of the cerebral cortex. It consists of numerous small neurons, small pyramidal cells, stellate cells, especially superficially and fusiform cells in deeper part whose axons project into the white substance of the cerebral cortex hemisphere
Polymorphism, Crystallization definition: Different crystal packing configurations which result in different properties such as SOLUBILITY which affects biological activity.
Polymorphism definition: The quality or state of being able to assume different forms.
Polymorphic Reticulosis definition: A condition that is characterized by multiple sites of lymphoid infiltration, often with an aggressive, necrotizing lesion of the upper airway. The term was used as a synonym for lethal midline granuloma.
