Intervertebral Disk Chemolysis definition: The dissolving of the nucleus pulposus, the semi-gelatinous tissue of a displaced INTERVERTEBRAL DISK. It is usually achieved by the direct injection of a proteolytic enzyme, especially CHYMOPAPAIN, into the herniated disk.
Peptide Hydrolases definition: Hydrolases that specifically cleave the peptide bonds found in PROTEINS and PEPTIDES. Examples of sub-subclasses for this group include EXOPEPTIDASES and ENDOPEPTIDASES.
proteolytic enzymes definition: Enzymes produced and secreted by the pancreas which aid in the proteolysis of proteins in the digestive tract. Pancreatic proteolytic enzymes include trypsin, chymotrypsin and carboxypeptidase; these enzymes are secreted as zymogens, inactive precursors of the enzymes, and are activated in the lumen of the digestive canal. Another proteolytic enzyme, enteropeptidase, is associated with the brush border of enterocytes; this enzyme catalyses the conversion of trypsinogen into trypsin which, in turn, can activate a number of other pancreatic zymogens. ATP-Dependent Proteases definition: Proteases that contain proteolytic core domains and ATPase-containing regulatory domains. They are usually comprised of large multi-subunit assemblies. The domains can occur within a single peptide chain or on distinct subunits.
proteolysis definition: The chemical reactions and pathways resulting in the breakdown of a protein by the destruction of the native, active configuration, with the hydrolysis of peptide bonds. [GOC:jsg, GOC:mah]
proteolysis definition: splitting of proteins by hydrolysis of the peptide bonds with formation of smaller polypeptides; the process may be catalyzed by proteolytic enzymes, by acids, or by bases.
Protein Cleavage definition: Protein Cleavage involves hydrolysis by proteolytic enzymes of specific peptide bond(s), forming smaller polypeptides in the target protein during maturation or modification of functional activity.
Proteolysis definition: Proteolysis typically involves hydrolysis of specific peptide bond(s) with formation of smaller polypeptides in a target protein during maturation or modification of functional activity. The process may be catalyzed by proteolytic enzymes, by acids, or by bases.
Monobasic Proteolytic Cleavage Site definition: A site on a protein that is a target for enzymatic cleavage, where the residue on the amino terminal side of the cleavage site is a basic amino acid that is not adjacent to other basic amino acids.
Protease Domain definition: The portion of a proteolytic protein which causes hydrolysis and cleavage of other protein polypeptides.
Proteolytic Processing definition: Generally irreversible, Proteolytic Processing involves removal of peptide segments from proteins, usually from the N- or C-terminus and often during polypeptide maturation, to regulate activity, location, or stability.
regulation of proteolysis definition: Any process that modulates the frequency, rate or extent of the hydrolysis of a peptide bond or bonds within a protein. [GOC:mah]
Regulation of Proteolysis definition: Biochemical and cellular mechanisms involved in Regulation of Proteolysis ensure that hydrolysis of one or more peptide bonds within target proteins by proteolytic enzymes occur at the correct time and location.
Protease definition: Enzymes acting on peptide bonds. EC 3.4.-
