Denture Repair definition: The process of reuniting or replacing broken or worn parts of a denture.
DNA Repair definition: The reconstruction of a continuous two-stranded DNA molecule without mismatch from a molecule which contained damaged regions. The major repair mechanisms are excision repair, in which defective regions in one strand are excised and resynthesized using the complementary base pairing information in the intact strand; photoreactivation repair, in which the lethal and mutagenic effects of ultraviolet light are eliminated; and post-replication repair, in which the primary lesions are not repaired, but the gaps in one daughter duplex are filled in by incorporation of portions of the other (undamaged) daughter duplex. Excision repair and post-replication repair are sometimes referred to as "dark repair" because they do not require light.
DNA repair definition: reconstruction of a continuous two-stranded DNA molecule without mismatch from a molecule which contained damaged regions; the major repair mechanisms are excision repair, photoreactivation repair, and post-replication repair.
DNA repair definition: The process of restoring DNA after damage. Genomes are subject to damage by chemical and physical agents in the environment (e.g. UV and ionizing radiations, chemical mutagens, fungal and bacterial toxins, etc.) and by free radicals or alkylating agents endogenously generated in metabolism. DNA is also damaged because of errors during its replication. A variety of different DNA repair pathways have been reported that include direct reversal, base excision repair, nucleotide excision repair, photoreactivation, bypass, double-strand break repair pathway, and mismatch repair pathway. [PMID:11563486]
DNA Repair definition: Enzymatic restoration of DNA structure after chemical, radiation, or spontaneous damage.
Esophagoplasty definition: A plastic operation on the esophagus. (Dorland, 28th ed)
Excision Repair definition: Excision Repair mechanisms remove and replace damaged nucleotides from DNA molecules with new nucleotide subunits, e.g., Base Excision Repair, Nucleotide Excision Repair, or SOS Function.
Scleroplasty definition: Plastic surgery of the SCLERA. This procedure is used frequently to prevent blindness and poor vision in patients, especially children, with MYOPIA.
Blepharoplasty definition: Plastic surgery of the eyelid. (Cline et al., Dictionary of Visual Science, 4th ed)
DNA Mismatch Repair definition: A DNA repair pathway involved in correction of errors introduced during DNA replication when an incorrect base, which cannot form hydrogen bonds with the corresponding base in the parent strand, is incorporated into the daughter strand. Excinucleases recognize the BASE PAIR MISMATCH and cause a segment of polynucleotide chain to be excised from the daughter strand, thereby removing the mismatched base. (from Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2001)
mismatch repair definition: A system for the correction of errors introduced during DNA replication when an incorrect base, which cannot form hydrogen bonds with the corresponding base in the parent strand, is incorporated into the daughter strand. The mismatch repair system promotes genomic fidelity by repairing base-base mismatches, insertion-deletion loops and heterologies generated during DNA replication and recombination. [ISBN:0198506732 "Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology", PMID:11687886]
Mismatch Repair definition: The mismatch repair (MMR) system promotes genomic fidelity by repairing base-base mismatches, insertion-deletion loops and heterologies generated during DNA replication and recombination. This function is critically dependent on the assembly of multimeric complexes involved in mismatch recognition and signal transduction to downstream repair events. (PMID: 11687886)
recombinational repair definition: The repair of damaged DNA that involves the exchange, reciprocal or nonreciprocal, of genetic material between the broken DNA molecule and a homologous region of DNA. [GOC:elh]
Recombination Repair definition: Homologous recombination can operate at both double-strand breaks and free ends. The homologous chromosome serves as a template for DNA repair during recombination.
postreplication repair definition: Pathways for DNA repair which occur after DNA has replicated, e.g. mismatch repair, and which involve translesion synthesis (TLS-type) DNA polymerases. [GOC:ai, ISBN:0716735202, PMID:12154119]
photoreactive repair definition: The repair of UV-induced T-T, C-T and C-C dimers by directly reversing the damage to restore the original pyrimidines. [GOC:elh, PMID:10915863]
protein repair definition: The process of restoring a protein to its original state after damage by such things as oxidation or spontaneous decomposition of residues. [GOC:mlg]
Repair Complex definition: Initial or intermediate protein-DNA complexes present during the process of DNA repair.
Repair Enzymology definition: The study of the enzymes and mechanisms involved in the repair of damaged DNA.
