They are usually concerned with identifying or measuring the effects of risk factors or exposures. The common types of analytic study are CASE-CONTROL STUDIES; COHORT STUDIES; and CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDIES.

Behavioral Research definition: Studies of the motivating factors that influence health practices as well as efforts to modify these practices.
Biomedical Research definition: Research that involves the application of the natural sciences, especially biology and physiology, to medicine. (from American Heritage Dictionary, 4th ed)
Biomedical Research definition: Research concerned with the application of biological and physiological principles to clinical medicine.
clinical research definition: research conducted with human subjects or on material of human origin in which an investigator directly interacts with human subjects; includes development of new technologies, mechanism of human diseases, therapy, clinical trials, epidemiology, behavior and health services research.
Clinical Study definition: Research conducted with human subjects or on material of human origin in which an investigator directly interacts with human subjects; includes development of new technologies, study of mechanisms of human diseases, therapy, clinical trials, epidemiologic, behavior, and health services research.
Health Services Research definition: The integration of epidemiologic, sociological, economic, and other analytic sciences in the study of health services. Health services research is usually concerned with relationships between need, demand, supply, use, and outcome of health services. The aim of the research is evaluation, particularly in terms of structure, process, output, and outcome. (From Last, Dictionary of Epidemiology, 2d ed)
Nursing Research definition: Research carried out by nurses, generally in clinical settings, in the areas of clinical practice, evaluation, nursing education, nursing administration, and methodology.
nursing research definition: research carried out by nurses, generally in clinical settings, in the areas of clinical practice, evaluation, nursing education, nursing administration, and methodology.
Nursing Research definition: Clinical research carried out by nurses.
Research definition: Critical and exhaustive investigation or experimentation, having for its aim the discovery of new facts and their correct interpretation, the revision of accepted conclusions, theories, or laws in the light of newly discovered facts, or the practical application of such new or revised conclusions, theories, or laws. (Webster, 3d ed)

Research Design definition: A plan for collecting and utilizing data so that desired information can be obtained with sufficient precision or so that an hypothesis can be tested properly.
Study Design definition: A plan detailing how a study will be performed in order to represent the phenomenon under examination, to answer the research questions that have been asked, and defining the methods of data analysis. Study design is driven by research hypothesis being posed, study subject/population/sample available, logistics/resources: technology, support, networking, collaborative support, etc.
Research Methods definition: Develop and evaluate new laboratory assays, behavioral methods, and statistical techniques for epidemiologic studies. (FMB)
Nontherapeutic Human Experimentation definition: Human experimentation that is not intended to benefit the subjects on whom it is performed. Phase I drug studies (CLINICAL TRIALS, PHASE I AS TOPIC) and research involving healthy volunteers are examples of nontherapeutic human experimentation.
Interdisciplinary Research definition: Studies that bring together multiple scientific disciplines to address specific issues.
Research Activity definition: Systematic investigation into a subject in order to discover facts, establish or revise a theory, or develop a plan of action based on the facts discovered.
Embryo Research definition: Experimentation on, or using the organs or tissues from, a human or other mammalian conceptus during the prenatal stage of development that is characterized by rapid morphological changes and the differentiation of basic structures. In humans, this includes the period from the time of fertilization to the end of the eighth week after fertilization.
Fetal Research definition: Experimentation on, or using the organs or tissues from, a human or other mammalian conceptus in the postembryonic period, after the major structures have been outlined. In humans, this corresponds to the period from the third month after fertilization until birth.
Genetic Research definition: Research into the cause, transmission, amelioration, elimination, or enhancement of inherited disorders and traits.

dental research definition: investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories or laws in the light of new facts, or practical application of such new or revised theories or laws in relation to dental science and dental care.
Observation definition: The act of regarding attentively and studying facts and occurrences, gathering data through analyzing, measuring, and drawing conclusions, with the purpose of applying the observed information to theoretical assumptions. Observation as a scientific method in the acquisition of knowledge began in classical antiquity; in modern science and medicine its greatest application is facilitated by modern technology. Observation is one of the components of the research process.
Empirical Research definition: The study, based on direct observation, use of statistical records, interviews, or experimental methods, of actual practices or the actual impact of practices or policies.
Experiment definition: A set of actions and observations, performed to verify or falsify a hypothesis or research a causal relationship between phenomena.
