Airway Resistance definition: Physiologically, the opposition to flow of air caused by the forces of friction. As a part of pulmonary function testing, it is the ratio of driving pressure to the rate of air flow.
Ampicillin Resistance definition: Nonsusceptibility of a microbe to the action of ampicillin, a penicillin derivative that interferes with cell wall synthesis.
Capillary Resistance definition: The vascular resistance to the flow of BLOOD through the CAPILLARIES portions of the peripheral vascular bed.
Chloramphenicol Resistance definition: Nonsusceptibility of bacteria to the action of CHLORAMPHENICOL, a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis in the 50S ribosomal subunit where amino acids are added to nascent bacterial polypeptides.
Drug Resistance definition: Diminished or failed response of an organism, disease or tissue to the intended effectiveness of a chemical or drug. It should be differentiated from DRUG TOLERANCE which is the progressive diminution of the susceptibility of a human or animal to the effects of a drug, as a result of continued administration.
drug resistance definition: tendency of biological systems (organisms, cells, or cell-free systems) to fail to respond as expected to drug treatment or exposure; may be due to specific enzymes, transporters, or receptors which block drug action.
drug resistance definition: OBSOLETE (was not defined before being made obsolete). [GOC:go_curators]
Drug Resistance definition: Diminished or failed response of an organism, disease, or tissue to the intended effectiveness of a chemical or drug. Mechanisms, functions, activities, or processes exhibited by pathogens to withstand previously toxic drugs.
Insecticide Resistance definition: The development by insects of resistance to insecticides.
insecticide resistance definition: development by insects of resistance to insecticides.
Insulin Resistance definition: Diminished effectiveness of INSULIN in lowering blood sugar levels: requiring the use of 200 units or more of insulin per day to prevent HYPERGLYCEMIA or KETOSIS. It can be caused by the presence of INSULIN ANTIBODIES or the abnormalities in insulin receptors (RECEPTOR, INSULIN) on target cell surfaces. It is often associated with OBESITY; DIABETIC KETOACIDOSIS; INFECTION; and certain rare conditions. (from Stedman, 25th ed)
Kanamycin Resistance definition: Nonsusceptibility of bacteria to the antibiotic KANAMYCIN, which can bind to their 70S ribosomes and cause misreading of messenger RNA.
R factor definition: a class of plasmids in bacterial cells that promote resistance to agents such as antibiotics, metal ions, UV radiation, and bacteriophage.
R Factors definition: A class of plasmids that transfer antibiotic resistance from one bacterium to another by conjugation.
Methicillin Resistance definition: Non-susceptibility of a microbe to the action of METHICILLIN, a semi-synthetic penicillin derivative.
Drug Resistance, Multiple definition: Simultaneous resistance to several structurally and functionally distinct drugs.
multidrug resistance definition: Adaptation of tumor cells to anticancer drugs in ways that make the drugs less effective.
multidrug resistance definition: characteristic of certain cancer cells and infectious microorganisms, where resistance develops to a broad variety of chemically unrelated drugs; may be due to genetic induction of a membrane pump (P glycoprotein) or other mechanisms.
Multidrug Resistance definition: Simultaneous resistance to a spectrum of unrelated drugs following exposure to a single agent. It may result from overexpression of the integral plasma membrane protein, P-glycoprotein. This adaptation of tumor cells to anticancer drugs, mediated by inactivation of the drug or removing it from the target tumor cells, tends to make the drugs less effective.
Cephalosporin Resistance definition: Non-susceptibility of an organism to the action of the cephalosporins.
ABCB1 Gene definition: This gene plays a role in multi-drug resistance and is involved in blood-brain barrier transport.
Activated Protein C Resistance definition: A hemostatic disorder characterized by a poor anticoagulant response to activated protein C (APC). The activated form of Factor V (Factor Va) is more slowly degraded by activated protein C. Factor V Leiden mutation (R506Q) is the most common cause of APC resistance.
Antibiotic Resistance definition: The mechanisms, functions, activities, or processes exhibited by microorganisms, especially bacteria, to resist or to become tolerant to antibiotics.
disease resistance definition: OBSOLETE (was not defined before being made obsolete). [GOC:go_curators]
carbamate resistance definition: OBSOLETE (was not defined before being made obsolete). [GOC:go_curators]
cyclodiene resistance definition: OBSOLETE (was not defined before being made obsolete). [GOC:go_curators]
DDT resistance definition: OBSOLETE (was not defined before being made obsolete). [GOC:go_curators]
insecticide resistance definition: OBSOLETE (was not defined before being made obsolete). [GOC:go_curators]
Carcinogen Resistance definition: The natural or acquired ability of an organism to maintain its immunity to or to resist the effects of a cancer causing agent.
resistance definition: Failure of a cancer to shrink after treatment.
Resistance definition: Natural or acquired mechanisms, functions, activities, or processes exhibited by an organism to maintain immunity to, or to resist the effects of, an antagonistic agent, e.g., pathogenic microorganism, toxin, drug. (NCI)
Reactance definition: An opposition to the flow of electric current resulting from inductance and capacitance (rather than resistance).
Herbicide Resistance definition: Diminished or failed response of PLANTS to HERBICIDES.
abrasion resistance definition: [1] Abriebwiderstand, Abriebfestigkeit, Abriebbeständigkeit
abrasive resistance definition: [1] Abriebfestigkeit
resistance definition: Résistance.
air-resistance definition: Résistance à l’air.
