Spinal Nerve Roots definition: The paired bundles of nerve fibers entering and leaving the spinal cord at each segment. The dorsal and ventral nerve roots join to form the mixed segmental spinal nerves. The dorsal roots are generally afferent, formed by the central projections of the spinal (dorsal root) ganglia sensory cells, and the ventral roots efferent, comprising the axons of spinal motor and autonomic preganglionic neurons. There are, however, some exceptions to this afferent/efferent rule.
Tooth Root definition: The part of a tooth from the neck to the apex, embedded in the alveolar process and covered with cementum. A root may be single or divided into several branches, usually identified by their relative position, e.g., lingual root or buccal root. Single-rooted teeth include mandibular first and second premolars and the maxillary second premolar teeth. The maxillary first premolar has two roots in most cases. Maxillary molars have three roots. (Jablonski, Dictionary of Dentistry, 1992, p690)
tooth root definition: portion of a tooth which is covered by cementum, proximal to the neck of the tooth and ordinarily embedded in the dental alveolus.
Root definition: The part of a tooth below the neck of the tooth which is covered by cementum.
dorsal root definition: comprises the central branches of the dorsal root ganglion cells and connects to the gray matter of the spinal cord; each spinal nerve has one.
ventral root definition: formed from motor axons emerging from the gray matter of the spinal cord; each spinal nerve has one.
Plant Roots definition: The usually underground portions of a plant that serve as support, store food, and through which water and mineral nutrients enter the plant. (From American Heritage Dictionary, 1982; Concise Dictionary of Biology, 1990)
root definition: organ of higher plants growing underground for anchorage, water/nutrient absorption, and storage of food; can reproduce plant vegetatively, and is usually the largest part of the plant's body.
Root definition: The underground (typically) part of a seed plant body that usually originates from the hypocotyl, functions as an organ of absorption, aeration, and food storage as well as a means of anchor and support. It differs from a stem by lacking nodes, buds, and leaves.
Root of brachial plexus definition: General anatomical term which refers to either the anterior ramus of fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth cervical or first thoracic nerve.
