Gastrinoma definition: A GASTRIN-secreting neuroendocrine tumor of the non-beta ISLET CELLS, the GASTRIN-SECRETING CELLS. This type of tumor is primarily located in the PANCREAS or the DUODENUM. Majority of gastrinomas are malignant. They metastasize to the LIVER; LYMPH NODES; and BONE but rarely elsewhere. The presence of gastrinoma is one of three requirements to be met for identification of ZOLLINGER-ELLISON SYNDROME, which sometimes occurs in families with MULTIPLE ENDOCRINE NEOPLASIA TYPE 1; (MEN 1).
Gastrin Producing Tumor definition: A gastrin-secreting endocrine neoplasm of the non-beta islet cells. It is usually located in the pancreas but it is also found at other anatomic sites, including the stomach and small intestine.
gastrinoma definition: (gas-tri-NO-ma) A tumor that causes overproduction of gastric acid. It usually occurs in the islet cells of the pancreas but may also occur in the esophagus, stomach, spleen, or lymph nodes.
Alpha Cell definition: A cell in the periphery of the pancreatic islets that secretes glucagon.
Glucagon-Secreting Cells definition: A type of pancreatic cell representing about 5-20% of the islet cells. Alpha cells secrete GLUCAGON.
Beta Cell definition: A cell that composes the bulk of the islets of Langerhans and secretes insulin.
Insulin-Secreting Cells definition: A type of pancreatic cell representing about 50-80% of the islet cells. Beta cells secrete INSULIN.
Prolactinoma definition: A pituitary adenoma which secretes PROLACTIN, leading to HYPERPROLACTINEMIA. Clinical manifestations include AMENORRHEA; GALACTORRHEA; IMPOTENCE; HEADACHE; visual disturbances; and CEREBROSPINAL FLUID RHINORRHEA.
Prolactin Producing Pituitary Gland Adenoma definition: An adenoma of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland that produces prolactin. It is the most common type of pituitary gland adenomas and it is associated with hyperprolactinemia. Clinical manifestations include amenorrhea, galactorrhea, impotence, headache, and visual disturbances.
Synovial Cell definition: A fibroblast that lies between the cartilaginous fibers in the synovial membrane of joints.
Delta Cell of the Pancreas definition: A type of cell in the pancreatic islets that secretes somatostatin.
ACTH Producing Pituitary Gland Neoplasm definition: An adenoma or carcinoma of the pituitary gland that produces corticotropin. (NCI05)
Pancreatic Beta Cell Adenoma definition: An adenoma arising from the beta cells of the pancreas. It produces insulin.
Pancreatic Alpha Cell Adenoma definition: A benign endocrine neoplasm arising from the alpha cells of the pancreas. It produces glucagon.
Malignant Insulinoma definition: An insulin-producing endocrine neoplasm arising from the beta cells of the pancreas. It displays vascular invasion and metastasizes to other anatomic sites.
Malignant Glucagonoma definition: A glucagon-producing endocrine neoplasm arising from the alpha cells of the pancreas. It displays vascular invasion and metastasizes to other anatomic sites.
Growth Hormone Producing Pituitary Gland Adenoma definition: An adenoma of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland that produces growth hormone. The vast majority of cases are hormonally functioning and are associated with either gigantism or acromegaly. (NCI05)
Growth Hormone-Secreting Pituitary Adenoma definition: A pituitary tumor that secretes GROWTH HORMONE. In humans, excess HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE leads to ACROMEGALY.
G-Cell definition: Endocrine cells found in the pyloric gland mucosa (antral mucosa) of the stomach and responsible for the secretion of gastrin. (MeSH)
Gastrin-Secreting Cells definition: Endocrine cells which secrete GASTRIN, a peptide that induces GASTRIC ACID secretion. They are found predominantly in the GASTRIC GLANDS of PYLORIC ANTRUM in the STOMACH, but can also be found in the DUODENUM, nervous and other tissues.
Pancreatic Polypeptide-Secreting Cells definition: A group of islet cells (10-35%) which secrete PANCREATIC POLYPEPTIDE, a hormone that regulates APPETITE and FOOD INTAKE.
ACTH Producing Pituitary Gland Adenoma definition: An adenoma of the pituitary gland that produces corticotropin. The vast majority of cases are associated with Cushing disease. Clinical manifestations include truncal obesity with thin extremities, thinning of the skin, osteoporosis, and a tendency to bruise easily. Silent or hormonally non-functioning ACTH producing adenomas have also been described. They produce symptoms of a mass-related lesion.
ACTH-Secreting Pituitary Adenoma definition: A pituitary adenoma which secretes ADRENOCORTICOTROPIN, leading to CUSHING DISEASE.
secretion definition: The controlled release of a substance by a cell, a group of cells, or a tissue. [GOC:ai]
secretion by cell definition: The controlled release of a substance by a cell. [GOC:mah]
Cellular Secretion definition: Production by a cell or aggregation of cells (a gland) of a physiologically active substance and its movement out of the cell or organ in which it is formed. Discharge across the cell membrane, into the intracellular space or ducts, of endogenous substances resulting from the activity of intact cells of glands, tissues, or organs.
Mucus-Secreting Cell definition: It is the epithelium cell that produces mucin gel adherent to the mucosal surface. Mucus-secreting cells are widely distributed through the body. (NCI)
FSH Cell definition: A basophilic cell of the anterior pituitary gland whose granules secrete follicle-stimulating hormone
LH Cell definition: A luteinizing hormone secreting cell found in the anterior pituitary gland.
Somatotroph Cell definition: An acidophil of the adenohypophysis that stains preferentially with orange G and secretes growth hormone.
Somatotrophs definition: Anterior pituitary cells that produce GROWTH HORMONE.
Corticotroph Cell definition: A small, irregularly stellate, acidophilic cell of the adenohypophysis, having small, sparsely distributed secretory granules and secreting adrenocorticotropic hormone and b-endorphin, which are cleaved from a large prohormone called pro-opiomelanocortin.
Corticotrophs definition: Anterior pituitary cells that produce ADRENOCORTICOTROPHIC HORMONE.
