Body Fluids definition: Liquid components of living organisms.
body fluid definition: liquid components of living organisms.
fluids definition: Liquids.
FLUID definition: Liquid substances produced by the body.
Body Fluid or Substance definition: Liquid and semi liquid substances produced by living organisms to fulfill specific functions or excreted as waste; does not include hormones or enzymes.
Estrogens, Conjugated definition: Purified orally bioavailable female sex hormones isolated from pregnant mare urine or synthetically derived from plant materials and primarily conjugated as sulfate esters. Estrogen binds to and activates specific nuclear receptors, which, in turn, bind to estrogen response elements (EREs) in target genes, resulting in histone acetylation, alteration of chromatin conformation, and initiation of transcription. (NCI04)
Estrogens, Conjugated (USP) definition: A pharmaceutical preparation containing a mixture of water-soluble, conjugated estrogens derived wholly or in part from URINE of pregnant mares or synthetically from ESTRONE and EQUILIN. It contains a sodium-salt mixture of estrone sulfate (52-62%) and equilin sulfate (22-30%) with a total of the two between 80-88%. Other concomitant conjugates include 17-alpha-dihydroequilin, 17-alpha-estradiol, and 17-beta-dihydroequilin. The potency of the preparation is expressed in terms of an equivalent quantity of sodium estrone sulfate.
conjugated estrogens definition: Purified orally bioavailable female sex hormones isolated from pregnant mare urine or synthetically derived from plant materials and primarily conjugated as sulfate esters. Estrogen binds to and activates specific nuclear receptors, which, in turn, bind to estrogen response elements (EREs) in target genes, resulting in histone acetylation, alteration of chromatin conformation, and initiation of transcription. Hallucinogens definition: Drugs capable of inducing illusions, hallucinations, delusions, paranoid ideations, and other alterations of mood and thinking. Despite the name, the feature that distinguishes these agents from other classes of drugs is their capacity to induce states of altered perception, thought, and feeling that are not experienced otherwise.
hallucinogen definition: class of drugs capable of inducing illusions, hallucinations, delusions, paranoid ideations, and other alterations of mood and thinking; the feature that distinguishes these agents from other classes of drugs is their capacity to induce states of altered perception, thought, and feeling that are not experienced otherwise.
psychotomimetic drug definition: drugs which produce a state similar to that of psychosis.
Hazardous Substances definition: Substances which, upon release into the atmosphere, water, or soil, or which, in direct contact with the skin, eyes, or mucous membranes, or as additives to food, cause health risks to humans or animals through absorption, inhalation, or ingestion. The concept includes safe handling, transportation, and storage of these substances.
hazardous substance definition: substances which, upon release into the atmosphere, water, or soil, or which, in direct contact with the skin, eyes, or mucous membranes, or as a food additive, cause health risks to humans or animals through absorption, inhalation, or ingestion.
neurotransmitter definition: any of a group of substances that are released on excitation from the axon terminal of a presynaptic neuron and travel across the synaptic cleft to either excite or inhibit the target cell; included are neuromodulators, neuroregulators, neuromediators, neurohormones, and neurohumors, whether or not acting at synapses.
Neurotransmitter definition: Endogenous signaling molecules that alter the behavior of neurons or effector cells. Neurotransmitter is used here in its most general sense, including not only messengers that act directly to regulate ion channels, but also those that act through second messenger systems, and those that act at a distance from their site of release. Included are neuromodulators, neuroregulators, neuromediators, and neurohumors, whether or not acting at synapses.
Neurotransmitters definition: Endogenous signaling molecules secreted by neurons that alter the behavior of neurons or effector cells. Neurotransmitter is used here in its most general sense, including not only messengers that act directly to regulate ion channels, but also those that act through second messenger systems, and those that act at a distance from their site of release. Included are neuromodulators, neuroregulators, neuromediators, neurohormones, and neurohumors, whether or not acting at synapses.
Poisons definition: Substances which, when ingested, inhaled, or absorbed, or when applied to, injected into, or developed within the body in relatively small amounts may, by their chemical action, cause damage to structure or disturbance of function. (From Dorland, 27th ed)
Autacoids definition: A chemically diverse group of substances produced by various tissues in the body that cause slow contraction of smooth muscle; they have other intense but varied pharmacologic activities.
Anterior perforated substance definition: Subdivision of telencephalon which is a region on the ventro-medial aspect of the telencephalon penetrated by numerous blood vessels. It is bounded by the optic tract posteriorly and the olfactory trigone anteriorly.
Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances definition: Low-molecular-weight end products, probably malondialdehyde, that are formed during the decomposition of lipid peroxidation products. These compounds react with thiobarbituric acid to form a fluorescent red adduct.
MISCELLANEOUS AGENTS definition: NOTE: Includes all products not elsewhere classified.
Substance of Abuse definition: Any substance, including any illegal, prescription, over-the-counter agent or any other compound, used for the purpose other than indicated or used in quantities other than directed. Substances from various drug classes can be abused, such as opioids, amphetamines, analgesics, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, hallucinogens, steroids, tobacco products and alcoholic substances. A substance of abuse may act on the central nervous system (CNS) or can have an effect in other parts of the body and can lead to physical and/or physiological dependence.
Macromolecular Substances definition: Compounds and molecular complexes that consist of very large numbers of atoms and are generally over 500 kD in size. In biological systems macromolecular substances usually can be visualized using ELECTRON MICROSCOPY and are distinguished from ORGANELLES by the lack of a membrane structure.
Humic Substances definition: Organic matter in a state of advanced decay, after passing through the stages of COMPOST and PEAT and before becoming lignite (COAL). It is composed of a heterogenous mixture of compounds including phenolic radicals and acids that polymerize and are not easily separated nor analyzed. (E.A. Ghabbour & G. Davies, eds. Humic Substances, 2001).
Schedule of Controlled Substances definition: The abuse potential category to which an active ingredient, or combination of active ingredients, is assigned, as regulated by both the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the United States Food and Drug Administration.
Growth Substances definition: Signal molecules that are involved in the control of cell growth and differentiation.
Viscoelastic Substances definition: Substances that display the physical properties of ELASTICITY and VISCOSITY. The dual-nature of these substances causes them to resist applied forces in a time-dependent manner.
