Alkylation definition: The covalent bonding of an alkyl group to an organic compound. It can occur by a simple addition reaction or by substitution of another functional group.
alkylation definition: substitution of an alkyl group for an active hydrogen atom in an organic compound.
Alkylation definition: Alkylating Activity in biological systems is typically a process of covalent bonding in which a chemical substance replaces hydrogen atom(s) in biologically active molecules with alkyl radical(s), hindering proper function. DNA alkylation results in strand cross-linking and can inhibit DNA replication.

Energy Transfer definition: The transfer of energy of a given form among different scales of motion. (From McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 6th ed). It includes the transfer of kinetic energy and the transfer of chemical energy. The transfer of chemical energy from one molecule to another depends on proximity of molecules so it is often used as in techniques to measure distance such as the use of FORSTER RESONANCE ENERGY TRANSFER.
Glycogen Debranching Enzyme System definition: 1,4-alpha-D-Glucan-1,4-alpha-D-glucan 4-alpha-D-glucosyltransferase/dextrin 6 alpha-D-glucanohydrolase. An enzyme system having both 4-alpha-glucanotransferase (EC 2.4.1.25) and amylo-1,6-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.33) activities. As a transferase it transfers a segment of a 1,4-alpha-D-glucan to a new 4-position in an acceptor, which may be glucose or another 1,4-alpha-D-glucan. As a glucosidase it catalyzes the endohydrolysis of 1,6-alpha-D-glucoside linkages at points of branching in chains of 1,4-linked alpha-D-glucose residues. Amylo-1,6-glucosidase activity is deficient in glycogen storage disease type III.
Patient Transfer definition: Interfacility or intrahospital transfer of patients. Intrahospital transfer is usually to obtain a specific kind of care and interfacility transfer is usually for economic reasons as well as type of care provided.
RNA, Transfer definition: The small RNA molecules, 73-80 nucleotides long, that function during translation (TRANSLATION, GENETIC) to align AMINO ACIDS at the RIBOSOMES in a sequence determined by the mRNA (RNA, MESSENGER). There are about 30 different transfer RNAs. Each recognizes a specific CODON set on the mRNA through its own ANTICODON and as aminoacyl tRNAs (RNA, TRANSFER, AMINO ACYL), each carries a specific amino acid to the ribosome to add to the elongating peptide chains.
transfer RNA definition: small ribonucleic acid molecules 73 to 93 nucleotides long, occurring in cells in about 30 varieties and functioning in translation; each variety carries a specific amino acid to a site specified by an RNA codon, binding to amino acid, ribosome, and to the codon via an anticodon region; all have numerous modified bases and extensive secondary structure.
Transfer RNA definition: A class of RNA having structures with triplet nucleotide sequences that are complementary to the triplet nucleotide coding sequences of mRNA. The role of tRNAs in protein synthesis is to bond with amino acids and transfer them to the ribosomes, where proteins are assembled according to the genetic code carried by mRNA. (BioTech Life Science Dictionary)
Tendon Transfer definition: Surgical procedure by which a tendon is incised at its insertion and placed at an anatomical site distant from the original insertion. The tendon remains attached at the point of origin and takes over the function of a muscle inactivated by trauma or disease.
Transfer (Psychology) definition: Change in learning in one situation due to prior learning in another situation. The transfer can be positive (with second learning improved by first) or negative (where the reverse holds).
learning transfer definition: change in learning in one situation due to prior learning in another situation; proficiency acquired in a branch of knowledge or skill helps in the acquisition of knowledge or skill in another field; transfer can be positive (with second learning improved by first) or negative (where the reverse holds).
Transfer Agreement definition: A written agreement for the transfer of patients and their medical records from one health care institution to another.
Transfer Factor definition: Factor derived from leukocyte lysates of immune donors which can transfer both local and systemic cellular immunity to nonimmune recipients.
Nerve Transfer definition: Surgical reinnervation of a denervated peripheral target using a healthy donor nerve and/or its proximal stump. The direct connection is usually made to a healthy postlesional distal portion of a non-functioning nerve or implanted directly into denervated muscle or insensitive skin. Nerve sprouts will grow from the transferred nerve into the denervated elements and establish contact between them and the neurons that formerly controlled another area.
Needles, Medication Transfer definition: Needles designed to transfer medication from vials in hospital pharmacies. These devices are short, blunt needles (typically 1.6 cm [5/8 inch]), long enough to penetrate the vial stoppers but short enough to remove all medication. They are usually of 20 gauge to provide high flow rate with minimum coring.
Stretchers, Mobile, Hospital, Patient Transfer definition: Mobile hospital stretchers designed for atraumatic movement of patients by hospital personnel without changing the patients body position or lifting, rolling, or dragging them. These stretchers include a patient-transfer mechanism (e.g., mechanical, hydraulic) easy to operate by an attendant with minimal physical effort. Patient-transfer hospital stretchers are used to reduce injuries to both patients and staff while transferring nonambulatory, comatose, or neurologically injured patients between beds, tables, stretchers, or during other intrahospital patient transportation.
Transfer Care definition: Actions performed to assist in moving from one place to another.
Technology Transfer definition: Spread and adoption of inventions and techniques from one geographic area to another, from one discipline to another, or from one sector of the economy to another. For example, improvements in medical equipment may be transferred from industrial countries to developing countries, advances arising from aerospace engineering may be applied to equipment for persons with disabilities, and innovations in science arising from government research are made available to private enterprise.
Technology Transfer definition: The process of converting scientific findings from research laboratories into useful products by the commercial sector.
Adoptive Transfer definition: Form of passive immunization where previously sensitized immunologic agents (cells or serum) are transferred to non-immune recipients. When transfer of cells is used as a therapy for the treatment of neoplasms, it is called adoptive immunotherapy (IMMUNOTHERAPY, ADOPTIVE).
interhemispheric transfer definition: transfer of information between cerebral hemispheres.
placental transfer definition: blood-borne transfer of antibodies, nutrients, viruses, toxins, etc., from mother to fetus.
Nuclear Transfer Techniques definition: Methods of implanting a CELL NUCLEUS from a donor cell into an enucleated acceptor cell. Often the nucleus of a somatic cell is transferred into a recipient OVUM or stem cell (STEM CELLS) with the nucleus removed. This technology may provide means to generate autologous diploid pluripotent cell for therapeutic cloning, and a model for studying NUCLEAR REPROGRAMMING in embryonic stem cells. Nuclear transfer was first accomplished with frog eggs (RANA PIPIENS) and reported in 1952.
nuclear transfer definition: transfer of a single donor nucleus to an enucleated cell; e.g., to an unfertilized egg in somatic cell animal cloning.
