FAT Gene definition: This gene is involved in regulating cellular proliferation and signal transduction.
FAT Protein definition: The gene encoding this protein is an ortholog of the Drosophila fat gene, which encodes a tumor suppressor essential for controlling cell proliferation during Drosophila development. This protein is a member of the cadherin superfamily, a group of integral membrane proteins characterized by the presence of cadherin-type repeats. In addition to containing 34 tandem cadherin-type repeats, the gene product has five epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like repeats and one laminin A-G domain. This gene is expressed at high levels in a number of fetal epithelia. Its product probably functions as an adhesion molecule and/or signaling receptor, and is likely to be important in developmental processes and cell communication. (from LocusLink)
FAT Protein definition: The transmembrane FAT protein contains 34 cadherin repeats and a number of other motifs. FAT may be involved in contact-dependent cell interactions important in regulating growth. FAT mRNA is present in many epithelia and in some endothelial and smooth muscle cells. (from OMIM 600976 and NCI)
FAT wt Allele definition: Human FAT wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 7q11.2 and is approximately 28 kb in length. This allele, which encodes platelet glycoprotein 4 protein, is involved in tumor suppression and cell proliferation.
