Community-Institutional Relations definition: The interactions between members of a community and representatives of the institutions within that community.
Ethics, Institutional definition: The moral and ethical obligations or responsibilities of institutions.
Institutional Management Teams definition: Administrator-selected management groups who are responsible for making decisions pertaining to the provision of integrated direction for various institutional functions.
Institutional Practice definition: Professional practice as an employee or contractee of a health care institution.
Multi-Institutional Systems definition: Institutional systems consisting of more than one health facility which have cooperative administrative arrangements through merger, affiliation, shared services, or other collective ventures.
Ethics Committees, Research definition: Hospital or other institutional committees established to protect the welfare of research subjects. Federal regulations (the "Common Rule" (45 CFR 46)) mandate the use of these committees to monitor federally-funded biomedical and behavioral research involving human subjects.
Institutional Review Board definition: A group of scientists, doctors, clergy, and consumers at each health care facility that participates in a clinical trial. IRBs are designed to protect study participants. They review and must approve the action plan for every clinical trial. They check to see that the trial is well designed, does not involve undue risks, and includes safeguards for patients.
Institutional Review Board definition: A specially constituted independent review body comprised of medical, scientific and non-scientific members established and designated by an entity to ensure the protection of the rights, safety and well-being of human subjects recruited to participate in biomedical or behavioral research according to the requirements outlined in Title 38, part 16 (same as Title 45, part 46 and Title 21, part 56) of the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations. IRB responsibility include but not limited to the reviewing, approving, and providing continuing review of trial protocol and amendments and of the methods and material(s) to be used in obtaining and documenting informed consent of the trial. Other equivalent committees with the same or similar functions are also considered to be IRBs.
nosocomial infection definition: pertaining to or originating in the hospital; an infection not present or incubating prior to admittance to the hospital; usually used to refer to patients, but hospital personnel may also acquire nosocomial infection.
institutional care facility definition: facility which fosters the care of individuals who are in need of housing and daily care, such as orphans, foundlings, abandoned children, and homeless; also for adult day care facilities; not for the care of ill or those of in need of rehabilitation for this concept see HEALTH CARE FACILITY or its narrower terms.
