Definition

enEnglish
Ataxia Telangiectasia definition: An autosomal recessive inherited disorder characterized by choreoathetosis beginning in childhood, progressive CEREBELLAR ATAXIA; TELANGIECTASIS of CONJUNCTIVA and SKIN; DYSARTHRIA; B- and T-cell immunodeficiency, and RADIOSENSITIVITY to IONIZING RADIATION. Affected individuals are prone to recurrent sinobronchopulmonary infections, lymphoreticular neoplasms, and other malignancies. Serum ALPHA-FETOPROTEINS are usually elevated. (Menkes, Textbook of Child Neurology, 5th ed, p688) The gene for this disorder (ATM) encodes a cell cycle checkpoint protein kinase and has been mapped to chromosome 11 (11q22-q23).
ataxia telangiectasia definition: inherited disease characterized by onset in early childhood of progressive cerebellar ataxia, oculocutaneous telangiectasis, and severe sinopulmonary infections.
Ataxia Telangiectasia Syndrome definition: Rare hereditary disease characterized by extreme sensitivity to ionizing radiation or radiomimetic drugs because of a defect in DNA repair. AT heterozygosity is estimated to occur in more than 2% of the U.S. population; heterozygotes exhibit increased radiation sensitivity and are at increased risk for several types of cancer. The normal version of the gene that is defective in AT appears to activate the p53-dependent response to DNA damage.
Encephalitis Virus, St. Louis definition: A species of FLAVIVIRUS, one of the Japanese encephalitis virus group (ENCEPHALITIS VIRUSES, JAPANESE), which is the etiologic agent of ST. LOUIS ENCEPHALITIS in the United States, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
Encephalitis, St. Louis definition: A viral encephalitis caused by the St. Louis encephalitis virus (ENCEPHALITIS VIRUS, ST. LOUIS), a FLAVIVIRUS. It is transmitted to humans and other vertebrates primarily by mosquitoes of the genus CULEX. The primary animal vectors are wild birds and the disorder is endemic to the midwestern and southeastern United States. Infections may be limited to an influenza-like illness or present as an ASEPTIC MENINGITIS or ENCEPHALITIS. Clinical manifestations of the encephalitic presentation may include SEIZURES, lethargy, MYOCLONUS, focal neurologic signs, COMA, and DEATH. (From Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, p750)
ATM wt Allele definition: Human ATM wild-type allele is located within 11q22-q23 and is approximately 143 kb in length. This allele, which encodes serine-protein kinase ATM protein, plays a critical role in cell cycle checkpoint signaling pathways required for cellular response to DNA damage and maintenance of genomic stability. Defects in the ATM gene cause ataxia telangiectasia and contribute to certain cancers such as T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia and B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas.
Reagents, Serology, Virus, Saint Louis Encephalitis, Antibody definition: Serology reagents intended to detect antibodies to Saint Louis encephalitis virus, a single-stranded RNA virus of the family Flaviviridae. This virus may cause encephalitis and encephalomyelitis; it is usually transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes.
