Definition

enEnglish
DNA Probes definition: Species- or subspecies-specific DNA (including COMPLEMENTARY DNA; conserved genes, whole chromosomes, or whole genomes) used in hybridization studies in order to identify microorganisms, to measure DNA-DNA homologies, to group subspecies, etc. The DNA probe hybridizes with a specific mRNA, if present. Conventional techniques used for testing for the hybridization product include dot blot assays, Southern blot assays, and DNA:RNA hybrid-specific antibody tests. Conventional labels for the DNA probe include the radioisotope labels 32P and 125I and the chemical label biotin. The use of DNA probes provides a specific, sensitive, rapid, and inexpensive replacement for cell culture techniques for diagnosing infections.
Reagents, Molecular Assay, Nucleic Acid Probe, DNA definition: Molecular assay reagents consising of a nucleic acid probe with a DNA chemical structure. DNA probes may be radioactively or nonradioactively (both enzymatic and nonenzymatic) labeled. DNA probes are used in tests to obtain information about the genetic characteristics of a sample; these procedures are generically known as nucleic acid assays and include hybridization assays, amplification methods (e.g., polymerase chain reaction), and electrophoretic separation.
DNA Probes definition: A piece of DNA that has been labeled, usually radioactively or with a fluorescent dye, which is used in hybridization studies. Applications include Northern and Southern blots, in situ hybridization techniques, and diagnostic tests. DNA probes can be highly specific or degenerate.
Electron Probe Microanalysis definition: Identification and measurement of ELEMENTS and their location based on the fact that X-RAYS emitted by an element excited by an electron beam have a wavelength characteristic of that element and an intensity related to its concentration. It is performed with an electron microscope fitted with an x-ray spectrometer, in scanning or transmission mode.
electron probe spectrometry definition: identification and measurement of concentration of elements based on the fact that primary-emission x-rays emitted by an element excited by an electron beam have a wavelength characteristic of that element and an intensity related to its concentration; may be performed by an electron probe microanalyzer, an electron microscope microanalyzer, or by an electron microscope, or scanning electron microscope, fitted with an x-ray spectrometer.
Fluorescent Dyes definition: Agents that emit light after excitation by light. The wave length of the emitted light is usually longer than that of the incident light. Fluorochromes are substances that cause fluorescence in other substances, i.e., dyes used to mark or label other compounds with fluorescent tags.
fluorescent dye/probe definition: dyes that emit light when exposed to light; the wave length of the emitted light is usually longer than that of the incident light; fluorochromes are substances that cause fluorescence in other substances, that is, dyes used to mark or label other compounds with fluorescent tags, and they are used as markers in biochemistry and immunology.
Radiation Survey Meters, Geiger-Muller definition: Radiation survey meters designed to be sufficiently sensitive to detect a single ionization event. These meters usually consist of a cylinder that is pressurized (typically from 70 to 200 mm Hg) and contains a mixture of helium, neon, or argon and a quenching gas. A metal rod running through the center of the cylinder acts as an anode, and the cylinder wall acts as a cathode. Ionization radiation enters the chamber through a window on the front of the cylinder, producing an ionization avalanche. Over a period of time (e.g., a minute), a pulse counter registers each ionization avalanche and quenching as a pulse and displays the results on a meter. An audio speaker may be added to broadcast each ionization avalanche as a cracking sound. Geiger-Muller survey meters are used to detect low-level radiation (less than 100 milliroentgen/hour); they are useful for detecting radioactive spills and contamination of work areas as well as in instrumentation.
Geiger-Mueller Counters definition: A radiation counter that uses a radiation-counter tube, operated in the Geiger range, to detect and count ionizing particles. (McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 6th ed)
Molecular Probes definition: A group of atoms or molecules attached to other molecules or cellular structures and used in studying the properties of these molecules and structures. Radioactive DNA or RNA sequences are used in MOLECULAR GENETICS to detect the presence of a complementary sequence by NUCLEIC ACID HYBRIDIZATION.
