X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy definition: A quantitative spectroscopic technique that both determines the identities and percent composition of elements in a material and measures the elemental chemical and electronic states for a sample. The process, which occurs in a vacuum, involves the irradiation of the material of interest with a beam of aluminum or magnesium X-rays while measuring both the kinetic energy and number of electrons that are released from the outer surface.
X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy definition: A form of photoelectron spectroscopy in which a sample is irradiated with a beam of monochromatic X-RAYS and the energies of the resulting photoelectrons are analyzed.

This approach is followed in the present study in which X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and reactivity titrations are used to investigate siliceous supports modified with an aminosilane precursor followed by a maleimide-bearing crosslinker for attachment of nucleic acids.

After each run (1, 3, 7, 14, and sometimes 30, 62 days) the solutions were analyzed for B and Si by inductively coupled plasma (ICP), the weight losses were determined, and the residual solid were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
