Bone Morphogenetic Protein 5 definition: A bone morphogenetic protein that may play a role in CARTILAGE formation. It is a potent regulator of the growth of CHONDROCYTES and the synthesis of cartilage matrix proteins. Evidence for its role in cartilage formation can be seen in MICE, where genetic mutations that cause loss of bone morphogenetic protein 5 function result in the formation of small malformed ears.
Bone Morphogenetic Protein 5 definition: Bone Morphogenetic Protein 5, encoded by the BMP5 gene, is a member of the TGF-beta family of growth factors. Morphogenetic Protein 5 signals through receptor serine/threonine kinases and induces cartilage and bone formation. It is expressed in the lungs and liver. (NCI)
BMP5 Gene definition: This gene plays a role in the regulation of mesenchymal differentiation. It is involved in cartilage and bone formation.
BMP5 wt Allele definition: Human BMP5 wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 6p12.1 and is approximately 120 kb in length. This allele, which encodes bone morphogenetic protein 5, plays a role in serine/threonine kinase signal transduction and induces cartilage and bone formation.
