Definition

enEnglish
1,4-alpha-Glucan Branching Enzyme definition: In glycogen or amylopectin synthesis, the enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of a segment of a 1,4-alpha-glucan chain to a primary hydroxy group in a similar glucan chain. EC 2.4.1.18.
chloramphenicol acetyltransferase definition: bacterial enzyme which detoxifies the antibiotic chloramphenicol the gene therefore confers chloramphenicol resistance, which can be used as a marker or selector in genetic transfection experiments.
Chloramphenicol O-Acetyltransferase definition: An enzyme that catalyzes the acetylation of chloramphenicol to yield chloramphenicol 3-acetate. Since chloramphenicol 3-acetate does not bind to bacterial ribosomes and is not an inhibitor of peptidyltransferase, the enzyme is responsible for the naturally occurring chloramphenicol resistance in bacteria. The enzyme, for which variants are known, is found in both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. EC 2.3.1.28.
Chloramphenicol O-acetyltransferase definition: Bacterial chloramphenicol-O-acetyltransferase protein (219 aa, 26 kD) is encoded by the bacterial chloramphenicol-O-acetyltransferase (cat) gene. This enzyme detoxifies the antibiotic chloramphenicol via acetylation to yield chloramphenicol 3-acetate. The presence of this enzyme confers chloramphenicol resistance to bacteria, which is used as a marker for selection in molecular techniques that utilize genetic transfection.
Coenzymes definition: Small molecules that are required for the catalytic function of ENZYMES. Many VITAMINS are coenzymes.
coenzyme analog definition: synthetic or natural chemical compounds which resemble naturally occurring coenzymes in structure and/or function.
enzyme electrode definition: combination of any electrochemical probe with a thin layer (10 - 200mm) of immobilized enzyme; in these devices, the function of the enzyme is to provide selectivity by virtue of its biological affinity for a particular substrate molecule.
Enzyme Activation definition: Conversion of an inactive form of an enzyme to one possessing metabolic activity. It includes 1, activation by ions (activators); 2, activation by cofactors (coenzymes); and 3, conversion of an enzyme precursor (proenzyme or zymogen) to an active enzyme.
Enzymes definition: Biological molecules that possess catalytic activity. They may occur naturally or be synthetically created. Enzymes are usually proteins, however CATALYTIC RNA and CATALYTIC DNA molecules have also been identified.
enzyme definition: protein molecules that possess catalytic activity; they may occur naturally or be synthetically created; for catalytic RNA use RIBOZYME.
