Gastric Inhibitory Polypeptide definition: A gastrointestinal peptide hormone of about 43-amino acids. It is found to be a potent stimulator of INSULIN secretion and a relatively poor inhibitor of GASTRIC ACID secretion.
gastric inhibitory peptide definition: secreted by the mucosa of the upper small intestine; has a mild effect in decreasing motor activity of the stomach and therefore slowing the emptying of gastric contents into the duodenum.
Inhibition definition: The interference with or prevention of an action or response even though the stimulus for that action or response is present.
Leukocyte Migration-Inhibitory Factors definition: Protein factor(s) released by sensitized lymphocytes (and possibly other cells) that inhibit the movement of LEUKOCYTES, especially polymorphonuclear cells, away from their site of release. Assays for these factors are used as tests for cellular immunity. Two of the common assays are the LEUKOCYTE MIGRATION CAPILLARY TUBE TECHNIQUE (LMCT) and the LEUKOCYTE MIGRATION AGAROSE TEST (LMAT).
Transducin definition: A heterotrimeric GTP-binding protein that mediates the light activation signal from photolyzed rhodopsin to cyclic GMP phosphodiesterase and is pivotal in the visual excitation process. Activation of rhodopsin on the outer membrane of rod and cone cells causes GTP to bind to transducin followed by dissociation of the alpha subunit-GTP complex from the beta/gamma subunits of transducin. The alpha subunit-GTP complex activates the cyclic GMP phosphodiesterase which catalyzes the hydrolysis of cyclic GMP to 5'-GMP. This leads to closure of the sodium and calcium channels and therefore hyperpolarization of the rod cells. EC 3.6.1.-.
transducin definition: G protein found in retinal rod outer segment membranes, which couples the photoactivation of rhodopsin to intracellular cyclic AMP.
Gastric Inhibitory Polypeptide Receptor definition: Gastric inhibitory polypeptide (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) receptor; signals through stimulatory G-protein to increase intracellular cAMP; member of the G protein-coupled receptor family. (Proteome Summary from LocusLink)
Interleukin-11 definition: A lymphohematopoietic cytokine that plays a role in regulating the proliferation of ERYTHROID PRECURSOR CELLS. It induces maturation of MEGAKARYOCYTES which results in increased production of BLOOD PLATELETS. Interleukin-11 was also initially described as an inhibitor of ADIPOGENESIS of cultured preadipocytes.
interleukin 11 definition: cloned from a primate stromal cell line; plays a role in megakaryocyte proliferation and B cell differentiation.
interleukin-11 definition: A recombinant therapeutic agent which is chemically identical to or similar to the endogenous cytokine interleukin 11 (IL-11). Secreted by bone marrow stromal cells and a number of mesenchymal cells, IL-11 binds to and activates its cell-surface receptor, promoting primary and secondary immune responses, modulating antigen-specific antibody reactions, and preventing apoptotic cell death. This agent also stimulates the T-cell-dependent development of IgG-secreting B-cells in spleen cell cultures and may be an important regulator of megakaryocytopoiesis.
