Alpha Particles definition: Positively charged particles composed of two protons and two NEUTRONS, i.e. equivalent to HELIUM nuclei, which are emitted during disintegration of heavy ISOTOPES. Alpha rays have very strong ionizing power, but weak penetrability.
Beta Particles definition: High energy POSITRONS or ELECTRONS ejected from a disintegrating atomic nucleus.
Defective Viruses definition: Viruses which lack a complete genome so that they cannot completely replicate or cannot form a protein coat. Some are host-dependent defectives, meaning they can replicate only in cell systems which provide the particular genetic function which they lack. Others, called SATELLITE VIRUSES, are able to replicate only when their genetic defect is complemented by a helper virus.

Elementary Particles definition: Individual components of atoms, usually subatomic; subnuclear particles are usually detected only when the atomic nucleus decays and then only transiently, as most of them are unstable, often yielding pure energy without substance, i.e., radiation.
Subatomic Particle definition: Any particle smaller than the size of an atom, including the atomic particles protons, neutrons and electrons. These particles, in turn, are composed of the more elementary quarks particles.
Ions definition: An atom or group of atoms that have a positive or negative electric charge due to a gain (negative charge) or loss (positive charge) of one or more electrons. Atoms with a positive charge are known as CATIONS; those with a negative charge are ANIONS.
ion definition: atom or radical having an electrical charge owing to the loss or gain of one or more electrons; substances that form ions are called electrolytes.
Ion definition: An atom or molecule having a positive or negative charge owing to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.
Submitochondrial Particles definition: The various filaments, granules, tubules or other inclusions within mitochondria.
