LIM and Senescent Cell Antigen-Like Domains 1 definition: LIM and Senescent Cell Antigen-Like Domains 1 protein (325 aa, 32 kD) is a cell maturation protein that is encoded by the human LIMS1 gene and has a role in cell aging.
LIM and Senescent Cell Antigen-Like Domains 1 definition: LIM and Senescent Cell Antigen-Like Domains 1, encoded by the LIMS1 gene, is an adaptor protein which contains five LIM domains, or double zinc fingers. This protein is likely involved in integrin signaling through its LIM domain-mediated interaction with integrin-linked kinase, found in focal adhesion plaques. It is also thought to act as a bridge linking integrin-linked kinase to NCK adaptor protein 2, which is involved in growth factor receptor kinase signaling pathways. Its localization to the periphery of spreading cells also suggests that this protein may play a role in integrin-mediated cell adhesion or spreading. (LocusLink)
LIMS1 Gene definition: This gene is essential for cell shape, motility, and survival.
LIMS1 wt Allele definition: Human LIMS1 wild-type allele is located within 2q12.3-q13 and is approximately 150 kb in length. This allele, which encodes protein PINCH, is involved in growth factor receptor kinase signaling pathways and integrin-mediated cell adhesion.
Pinch Strength definition: Force exerted when using the index finger and the thumb. It is a test for determining maximum voluntary contraction force.
Dynamometers, Pinch Force, Hydraulic definition: Pinch test dynamometers designed to measure the force exerted between the thumb and an opposing finger or groupings of fingers when pressed together tightly, using a seated hydraulic system. These dynamometers typically consist of a manual, handheld instrument with a gauge that is usually supported by the therapist during the test and an attachment configured to measure pressure or force between the thumb and the fingers against the hydraulic resistance. The calibrated gauge has one dial and one or more scales to show the measured value of the force (usually in pounds, kilograms, or both); these instruments usually include a second pointer to retain the values of the maximum force reading until reset. The typical testing range on a dual scale is 0 to 20 kilograms (0 to 45 pounds). Hydraulic-type pinch force dynamometers are precision instruments intended mainly for use in physician's offices for evaluation of hand trauma and/or for assessment during physical therapy treatments.
Dynamometers, Hand Grip/Pinch Force, Bulb Squeeze definition: Dynamometers designed to measure the strength of a weak hand grip and/or the force exerted between the thumb and opposing finger or groupings of fingers when they are pressed tightly (i.e., pinch force), using small rubber or plastic bulbs that are squeezed. These dynamometers are manual, handheld instruments that include a handle with one of a set of small detachable bulbs that can be easily fitted to a calibrated gauge (e.g., a dial) to show the measured value of the force (usually in pounds, kilograms, or both); some instruments retain the values of the maximum force reading until reset. Hand grip/pinch force bulb squeeze dynamometers are intended mainly to measure the grasping power and pinch force in patients with severely impaired hands due to abnormalities or trauma and/or in children; they are used in physician's offices and for assessment during physical therapy treatments.
Dynamometers, Pinch Force definition: Dynamometers designed to measure the force exerted by the thumb and an opposing finger or groupings of fingers when pressed tightly together. These dynamometers typically consist of a manual, handheld measuring instrument with a mechanism that resists the force applied by the hand (e.g., a bulb, hydraulic system) or a strain gauge transducer, a measuring device, and a display (e.g., a gauge) to show the measured value of the force (usually in pounds, kilograms, or both). Dedicated instruments using bulbs, hydraulic systems, and strain gauge transducers are available. The output of strain gauges may be sent to computers or other electronic devices for data processing and/or storage. Pinch force dynamometers are intended mainly for use in doctor's offices, for evaluation of hand trauma, and/or for assessment during physical therapy treatments.

The function of a cylinder allowing simultaneous measurements of the opposition axis of the index finger and thumb of the hand and the magnitude of pinch force is described.

Daniel Bourbonnais et al.

Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation 5 (7), 02 Jan 2008

The amplitude of the pinch force exerted on the cylinder by the fingers is defined as the resultant of the forces in the different axes.

Daniel Bourbonnais et al.

Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation 5 (7), 02 Jan 2008

A software program was developed to measure the barycentre of the forces on the instrumented cylinder, allowing calculation of the angle of the opposition axis between the fingers and the location of the resulting pinch force on the cylinder, assuming that the pinch or grip forces are co-linear through the center of the cylinder.

Daniel Bourbonnais et al.

Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation 5 (7), 02 Jan 2008

Results The usefulness of the cylinder is demonstrated by evaluating the pinch force and the opposition axis in six healthy subjects lifting the cylinder from the table using three different orientations of their right hand.

Daniel Bourbonnais et al.

Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation 5 (7), 02 Jan 2008

This provides a rationale for developing an instrumented cylinder measuring both the amplitude of the pinch force and allowing self-selection or imposed orientation of the opposition axis.
