Bacteriocin Plasmids definition: Plasmids encoding bacterial exotoxins (BACTERIOCINS).
F Factor definition: A plasmid whose presence in the cell, either extrachromosomal or integrated into the BACTERIAL CHROMOSOME, determines the "sex" of the bacterium, host chromosome mobilization, transfer via conjugation (CONJUGATION, GENETIC) of genetic material, and the formation of SEX PILI.
plasmid definition: double-strand, closed DNA molecules found in cytoplasm of a variety of bacterial species that generally confer some evolutionary advantage to the host cells.
Plasmids definition: Extrachromosomal, usually CIRCULAR DNA molecules that are self-replicating and transferable from one organism to another. They are found in a variety of bacterial, archaeal, fungal, algal, and plant species. They are used in GENETIC ENGINEERING as CLONING VECTORS.
Plasmid definition: A small cellular inclusion consisting of a ring of DNA that is not in a chromosome but is capable of autonomous replication.
R factor definition: a class of plasmids in bacterial cells that promote resistance to agents such as antibiotics, metal ions, UV radiation, and bacteriophage.
R Factors definition: A class of plasmids that transfer antibiotic resistance from one bacterium to another by conjugation.
Plant Tumor-Inducing Plasmids definition: Plasmids coding for proteins which induce PLANT TUMORS. The most notable example of a plant tumor inducing plasmid is the Ti plasmid found associated with AGROBACTERIUM TUMEFACIENS.
Colicin Plasmids definition: Plasmids encoding COLICINS.
