Scales definition: Measuring instruments designed to determine the weight of bulk materials or large discrete objects. Scales use several methods for weighing, including gravimetric scales in which other masses are used to compare the mass of the unknown in the same way that balances work; spring scales, in which the gravitational force on the unknown is matched by a spring force of known constant; electromechanical scales using transducers and linear transformers or torque motors; and electronic scales using different types of sensors (e.g., strain gauges). Scales are used in the field of medicine to weigh patients for diagnostic or for some special treatments (e.g., dialysis, newborns), for clinical determinations (e.g., urine in diapers, blood in sponges), and also for general use (e.g., food weighing) in hospitals, nurseries, and at home.
Karnofsky Performance Status definition: A performance measure for rating the ability of a person to perform usual activities, evaluating a patient's progress after a therapeutic procedure, and determining a patient's suitability for therapy. It is used most commonly in the prognosis of cancer therapy, usually after chemotherapy and customarily administered before and after therapy. It was named for Dr. David A. Karnofsky, an American specialist in cancer chemotherapy.
Karnofsky Performance Status definition: A standard way of measuring the ability of cancer patients to perform ordinary tasks. The scores range from 0 to 100, with a higher score indicating a better ability to carry out daily activities. KPS may be used to determine a patient's prognosis, to measure changes in functioning, or to decide if a patient could be included in a clinical trial.
SCALE, PATIENT definition: A patient scale is a device intended for medical purposes that is used to measure the weight of a patient who cannot stand on a scale. This generic device includes devices placed under a bed or chair to weigh both the support and the patient, devices where the patient is lifted by a sling from a bed to be weighed, and devices where the patient is placed on the scale platform to be weighed. The device may be mechanical, battery powered, or AC-powered and may include transducers, electronic signal amplification, conditioning and display equipment.
Scales, Patient definition: Scales designed to weigh adult patients. These scales are made with different configurations according to patient capabilities (e.g., ambulatory, bed-ridden, disabled) and/or the procedure or treatment (e.g., intensive care, dialysis) needed.
Scale definition: An ordered reference standard used to measure incremental changes.
Ixodidae definition: A family of hardbacked TICKS, in the subclass ACARI. Genera include DERMACENTOR and IXODES among others.
Glucksberg Scale definition: The Glucksberg scale is a severity index for grading acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after allogeneic marrow transplantation. This index is based on the results of an analysis in which distinct patterns in the peak severity of GVHD involvement in the skin, liver, and gut were correlated with the risks of transplant-related mortality (TRM) and treatment failure (defined as relapse or death).
Celsius Scale definition: The temperature scale defined by the values 0 degree Celsius for the freezing point of water and 100 degrees Celsius for the boiling point of water. The Celsius degree (C) is the same size as a Kelvin and equal to (F - 32)/1.8.
Fahrenheit Scale definition: A thermometric scale named after the German physicist Gabriel Fahrenheit, on which under standard atmospheric pressure the boiling point of water is at 212 degrees above the zero of the scale, the freezing point is at 32 degrees above zero, and the zero point approximates the temperature produced by mixing equal quantities by weight of snow and common salt. The scale is used by the general population of USA and Jamaica for non-scientific temperature measurement.
